Concert review “Martina McBride, Trace Adkins ” by Jarrod Brown

The stage at Roberts Stadium was lit up Saturday night by three very talented country music acts. The show was scheduled to start at 7:30, but as we entered the stadium at 7:15 the music had already started. We made it to our seats in time to see the last two songs from the opening act which consisted of a female singer with a beautiful voice accompanied by a fellow playing the fire out of an acoustic guitar. We didn’t know who it was, but we were amazed at how good those two sounded. Turns out it was Sarah Buxton (Outside My Window; Stupid Boy), who just came out with her first CD. In between songs she engaged the audience with her fun personality, which kept our attention throughout her set.
The 2nd act was very entertaining as well. I had heard many of Trace Adkins’ songs on the radio, but never payed much attention to them. When he took the stage all of that changed. Seeing him perform live made me realize just how many great songs he has put out over the years. He is a big redneck man who does big redneck songs and does them well. He only slowed down for a couple of songs, one of which hit #1 in ’07 (Your gonna miss this). In between songs Trace kept the audience captivated with his dry wit and humor. For an encore he performed “ Muddy Water”, a song about being baptized, and said he hoped that would make up for the other songs he did which might have offended some. By the crowds reaction no one was offended, and with a group of African American background singers from Evansville accompanying him, he ended his set creating an atmosphere of a southern Baptist revival meeting.
Martina Mcbride was the last performer of the evening. With her amazing voice and award winning songs she was able to entertain the audience until her last tune, which was “Living on a prayer” by Bon Jovi. Martina even took a ride over the audience on a swing shaped like a moon, which took her to another stage set up in the middle of the crowd. When she arrived at the additional platform, she performed two songs then walked back to the stage amid cheering fans. She blew the roof off the stadium several times with her ability to hit and sustain high notes , especially when she sang “Where Would You Be”. She ended her set with the Bon Jovi cover, as the audience celebrated by knocking beachballs around the stadium, including on the stage. This circus atmosphere was a great way for Martina to end the show.

I used to love listening to the radio. It was the perfect platform to hear new songs, listen to your favorites, and if you had the right station, funny DJs. The radio used to trump all other forms of music in my car (mostly due to me just having a radio until more recent years). As time went on, the radio started losing its allure. Same songs are played at least twelve times in an hour, the greats are no longer played, and crap has taken its place.
Is it the times we’re in, or has the record labels taken away the magic of radio? I personally am not a country fan, but I do love listening to Johnny Cash (because he isn’t just country). So I decided I was going to call a local country radio station and request them to play Johnny Cash. My thoughts behind it were “who would say no to playing one of the greatest musicians of all time?” So after a couple of tries I got in touch with the DJ. I made my request and I was told flat out that they do not play Johnny Cash cause it wouldn’t fit in their slot. So I pushed a little harder and then I got an answer that baffled me, “I’m sorry sir but I’m not allowed to play his music.” I was silent for a moment, and then I hung up.
Although that wasn’t the first blow to the head when it came to the radio, but it was the biggest. If it wasn’t for greats like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and bands like Black Sabbath, Jimmy Hendrix, AC/DC, etc., where would these whinny bands be today? Has radio forgotten the ones that paved the way? Are we turning into a society of the now, or maybe it’s been this way the whole time? One thing I know for sure, radio has changed for the worse. The radio used to let bands like Metallica, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and so on that dominate the airwaves, now we have entertainers now. Singers who have no band but a DJ playing fabricated music.
Hear me now, the Lady GaGa’s, the Rihana’s, Jonahs brothers of the world will not last. These are the “now” singers that in a little while will fall off the face of the earth like the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, etc. It’s bands like Korn, Pearl Jam, and yes-even Metallica who still year after year sell out stadiums and huge venues. These are the bands that should be played on the radio religiously, not these gone by night bands.
Seriously are we going to sit back and let these crap bands and entertainers dominate the airwaves while the greats are left behind? Has the corporate radio destroyed anything-good left on the airwaves? Or are we forced to get things like XM radio to enable us to listen to the good stuff. It’s a sad day we live in when you have to pay to listen to decent radio.
So what is there for us to do? Sadly not a lot can be done. It always helps to get a group of friends to constantly ask to have a certain song played, or you could write a bunch of letters, but don’t expect much to happen. As long as their making money playing that type of crap, they won’t stop. So I say to all of you, if you want good music back on the airwaves, well then you must fight for it, and lets see if we can make the radio world a better place to live in.

Corey Haim Dead at 38

LOS ANGELES — Corey Haim, a 1980s teen heartthrob for his roles in “Lucas” and “The Lost Boys” whose career was blighted by drug abuse, has died. He was 38.
Haim died at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Los Angeles County coroner’s Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said.
An autopsy will determine the cause of death and there were no other details, she said. Police Sgt. Michael Kammert said there’s no evidence of foul play.

Band review “Falling Awake” and “Next to Holiday” by Jon Tucker

Another show at State Theatre
So my girlfriend and her sister asked if I wanted to go to State Theatre to see one of their favorite local band ‘Falling Awake”. So I grabbed my buddy and we went to embark on a potentially good night. My buddy and I have never heard this band before, and the clip we did hear of them was choppy and unclear so our views of this band had already formed.
"Next to Holiday"
We get to State a little late and missed the first two bands. When we got there and the band “Next to Holiday” came on. I was very impressed by the band. They were in sync with each other and each had their own talents that they brought to the table. The only complaint that I would have with the band is they need that little tweak and they would be on the right track, other than that they did a great job performing. I really enjoyed their set and I would definitely see them again.
"Falling Awake"
After the Next to Holiday set, the stage was being prepared for “Falling Awake”. My girlfriend and her sister had talked about them a lot so I figured I’d keep an open mind and block out the memory of them performing on the clip me and my buddy saw. Now it was time, it was Falling Awakes turn. To my surprise they did very well. The drummer was amazing as were the guitarist and bassist. Falling Awakes singer had some pipes on him. You can always bet that I would never “blow smoke” up a bands ass, and I’ll tell it like it is. So here is what I thought about the Falling Awake set. Their sound is good, there is a lot of talent in that band, each could use just a little work, but in all honesty what local couldn’t use some work. In all I was surprised that I left with two new bands to see on a regular, doesn’t happen a lot.
If you’re in the Tampa Bay area, and need some new music to listen, check these guys out. I promise you that you won’t regret it. They will keep you entertained and cause you to have a good time. Well until the next show, have fun, rock out, and party hard.
