Michael Ballard’s Full Throttle Saloon interview by James Lowe

1. Michael thanks for chatting with us, I know your busy on all the projects plus getting ready to ramp up for Full Throttle Saloon on Tru TV, Tell us what are some crazy stuff you got planned for the new Season?

 

Well we really raised the bar this year. We have more midgets, larger acts such as Ted Nugent, Hinder, Theory of a Dead Man and of course Jackyl. Our bartenders are the best we have ever had. The Flaunt Girls brought in
new elements to raise the entertainment level of their show. We also brought in freak shows and some of the best bike builders on the planet.

2. Michael, the new season is getting ready to kick off on Tru TV, Now Tru TV has gotten HUGE ratings and a ton of new content, alot of people are giving Full Throttle Saloon the credit, whats your thoughts?

I’m really humbled by all the responses to the show. I think that the program is way different than other shows that are on the network. Our story cannot be told in one hour, and it takes multiple shows to tell it. Some of
our situations take several days to unfold so you are left hanging wanting to find out the outcome. With that being said we are a real mini-series.

3 You guys average 15,000 guests a night, wow whatever your doing, keep it up, why is it so popular?

I think what sets the full throttle saloon apart from other places that it one of the only bars in the country that mixes all races and age groups. How many bars do you see that there is a 21 year old guy sitting on a bar stool beside a guy that 65 and they are hanging out and having a beer together?
They have one thing in common and that’s riding motorcycles. Most bars are so segregated by age.

4. You run the bar that is open 10 days a year? What the hell do you do the other parts of the year?

Well we are on the road all the time.   We go to other motorcycle shows all over the country and promote the rally sell t-shirts and rent cabins for the next Pappy Hoel Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis.  We do all the Easyrider
shows and other rallies like Daytona Bike Week, Myrtle Beach and Laconia Motorcycle Week etc.

5. You’re out there biking, and riding your motorcycle all over the highways and byways across this great land, what do you hear the most about the show when people see ya and chat about the program?

Probably the number one question people want to know is if Angie and I are married yet. That’s a huge topic on the show. Also where is Jesse, and people want to know if I still own the bar.

6. Speaking of riding the bike, a lot of people are taking up Motorcycle riding these days, what’s your take on the trend?

Well I think that peoples lives are so busy these days that they really can’t find the time to go to the lake or take week-end vacations. If you own a bike, its right in the garage you can jump on it, and go cruise for an
hour or two when you get off work, or you and your girl can jump on it and go out to dinner. It’s just such a fun thing to own, and you don’t have to plan it all out.  Just jump on and ride.

7. Working with Jackyl front man Jesse James Dupree, How has the business changed over the years what have you guys done with the bar that have improved the experience for the customer?

Jesse and I became best friends over the years. It’s funny how we met. My first year we opened, he called and was in Sturgis and wanted to play. He was out promoting his solo record. So we took him up on it and hired him to
come in and he killed it.  The next year Jackyl came out and played, and it has been there home every year on the Thursday night of the rally. It’s called Bikers Ball, and it has become the largest show in Sturgis during the
Pappy Hoel Motorcycle Rally. Jesse and the band have become huge supporters of the Throttle. They preach the word at every Jackyl show!!

8. You have some experienced talent performing on this season, how was it putting Ted Nugent out there with all the Crazyness of The Saloon?

Ted fit right in! We are a blue collar biker bar and you know how blue collar he is so he felt right at home! The bikers love Ted so we knew it was going to be a great night!

9. You recently told the press, ““This season we are giving the phrase taking it to the next level a whole new meaning.” Good lord, what the heck did you mean by that, ha ha.

Well we decided to pull out the stops for this year. We did just that 360 degrees. lol…You are going have to tune in on November 30th to get this one answered!

10. This past June, you guys took this thing on the road, WOW what the hell was production like for this, I understand 3 tractor trailers, tell me about it?

It was just that 3 tractors trailers and 2000 miles to set up the world’s biker bar in Laconia NH during their motorcycle rally. Angie wanted to kill me! Both she and Jesse thought I was crazy. We pulled it off and it
was a great rally. I can comfortably say we left a stain on that town! lol

11. I understand you have plans to do a tour or something with this? True or just talk?

Laconia was a huge test to see if we could take this massive undertaking out on the road. It proved itself so Angie, Jesse and I are planning a Full Throttle Saloon tour coming in 2012 to a town or corn field near you.

12. Now has the Economic problems facing the nation have any effect on the Saloon, is this stressed at all in the upcoming season?

The overall rally was down in attendance this year because of our economic downturn we are under.  I know it sounds crazy that we raised the level on a down year, but we did just that. It made for a very nervous rally
for me, and you will see all this come out on the show.

13. Now are some of the signature characters from the past seasons coming back this season?

There are a lot of the same people coming back, and some that we did not want back if you know what I mean. The viewer will also be introduced to some new characters this season.

14. You took on corporate competition last year and came out ahead, tell us any info from what people already know?

Last year we had Corporate America come in across the street and try to take everything I have built there. They came in big and went home small.  I guess they did not understand our slogan we are Americas #1 Blue Collar
Biker Bar. It just shows the loyalty we have built with our customers over the past 12 years, and I appreciate them so much.

15. Finally I have to ask how is Angie Carlson and is she still as feisty this season as she was last season?

Angie is doing great! Her and The Flaunts are getting booked all over the country for all kinds of events. She is moving forward with her dream of animal rescue. Between the Full Throttle Saloon, Angieland’s Animal
Nation and The Flaunts she is all kind of busy. YES she is still a handful!!! She is on my ass as I type this lol!!!!!

MINX band review along with Double Dukes… A KICKACTS two-fer!

Sorry for the crappy cell phone video but the band was hopping and I had to share it someway. Minx has been around for a long time and they never fail to deliver. Preston, Russel and the rest of the guys got a good thing going on. I know of some “band” people that bash MINX but I just have to say , “Hey, is your band packing places out week after week after week?” Probably not so there you go. These guys do and they work hard at their craft and it shows. I went with a wedding party last Saturday night and Eddie Crunk of Double Dukes was nice enough to let us all skip on the cover charge for the newly married couple and so I hung out for a couple of MINX’s sets and had a few beers to support the club. Eddie has a super nice place there and his Karaoke set up is the best in the Tri-State. He can take all of non singing weekend professionals and make us sound pretty awesome. Plus the light show is state of the art to with Intelligent lighting too.

Back to MINX. These guys fire off one hit after the other. From “Save a Horse Ride a cowboy” to “Patience” and everything in between. I don’t even think they stop to take a breath in between songs. It’s a constant mix of hit after hit and no slack songs. These guys nail the songs too pretty much note for note. Preston with his Bass slung low like a gunslinger, Bobby on vocals going from range to range effortlessly and his brother Dylan keeping the beat on drums and Russell holding down the guitar chores, well the band is well worth seeing. You definitely won’t be disappointed.

Double Dukes has awesome drink prices and a Kick ass nite Club. Go by and tell Eddie hello and hang out for a while. Enjoy the bands he brings in and if MINX is there too, then its a double bonus.

Ten Questions with “Sisemore”

1. Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

Paul: Hi everyone,well, my name is Paul Sisemore ,hence the band’s name, which, by the way wasn’t my idea, but I’ll get around to that. We are four people who have a love for all music and have a great time making it ourselves. I write, sing and play guitar, Russell Farrow plays guitar, David Wehner plays the bass, and Mark Busto plays drums. Felix deLuna played drums on the record. We can be found via all the usual places, www.sisemoreband.com, well as facebook, reverbnation, bandcamp, you name it, we’re there. Our record is out on itunes as well.

 

2. Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Paul: Growing up I was an Elvis fan. After I started playing guitar I gravitated more to “bands” that were guitar influenced. Boston, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, and I loved blues music from very early on. The Phil Spector “Wall of Sound” and Mo Town I’ve always been into. Later on in the Big 80’s U2 were my heroes and by the time grunge took over I was into everything from N.W.A, The Beastie Boys etc. JANE’S ADDICTION to this day is heavy source of inspiration as is Nirvana.

 

3. Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music?

Any pitfalls they should avoid? Paul: Yes I do have some advice. Having been signed to a major label in the mid 90’s (MCA) with my former band Sugarspoon, and having gone through seeing a label fire the people who signed you then rehire a staff who couldn’t care less about you, through the morphing of music into basically being free… Have a thick skin and beware, or get OUT! As fast as you can.

 

4. Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Paul: A year or so, we played locally in Clearwater, Fl. And basically had free reign. I’d been working on some blue-grassy/folky type things and in the middle of the set we sat down and did an acoustic set of 3 or 4 songs. We had the absolute best reaction from that.

 

5. On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

Paul: Worst gig ever. Russell, who has a kayak business, got us involved with a “community awareness” type thing the city of St.Pete was doing. It was August, the temperature 95* in the shade and about the same humidity. We were to load in about 3 in the afternoon to an outdoor portable stage that faced the setting sun. There was.. the slightest hint of a breeze. There was…no shade. Upon the completion of loading in we did a sound check and our friend Wes Dirth (Porcupine Tree) set to open the event. After Wes did his thing, we’d now been in the heat and sun approximately 4 hours, our moment of glory had arrived. There were barbeque vendors, girls playing volleyball on the beach behind us, a feeling of real community awareness springing from the St.Pete Police who outnumbered the crowd 2 to 1.. So, after we’d played a while, the organizer sair would we mind taking a short bhreak, the Police K9 Unit was arriving and would like to put on a brief demonstration. What could we say?? They after all had dogs..big dogs.. anyway, they started a little after 7 o’clock and by 8pm as the sun was setting were just finishing. Upstaged by a bunch of dogs we were.

 

6. Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

Paul: I play golf.

 

7. What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

Paul: It’s a mess. Same as our economy. It’s a shame and it’s free market at the same time. The internet helpeth and the internet destroyeth.

 

8. Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Paul: Russell, kayaking. David, gardening and taking care of his new baby boy. Mark, well there is that.. Mark likes the Bucs..Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

 

9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

Ginger. I love redheads!

 

10. # 10 is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Paul: You know, shouting out usually gets me in trouble. But if I must. I hate the division that this country is facing. The far Left and the far Right are BOTH WRONG. This country was built on neither Christianity or a One World Idea. It was however framed in TOLORENCE. That seems to me to what’s missing the most. I’d say I think we can get undo most of the damage done, but I fear the Media loves themselves and the bullshit they sell far too much. Best wishes, Paul Sisemore.

Steven Tyler takes a spill,loses some teeth, blames food poison

and apparently over time blew 20 million dollars on dope…I am going to kick in one of my all time favorite Aerosmith song videos too. Check it out at the bottom of this article. chuck

According to TMZ.com, AEROSMITH singer Steven Tyler was suffering from dehydration caused by a bout of food poisoning when he collapsed in a Paraguay hotel shower today.

Tyler was treated at a hospital in Paraguay’s capital for injuries to his face, including the loss of two teeth and cuts to his eyebrow and mouth.

TMZ.com spoke with the singer’s manager, who described Tyler‘s injuries as “minor” and said Steven has already been released from the hospital.

AEROSMITH rescheduled its Tuesday night concert in Asuncion to Wednesday evening, and the band rep tells TMZ.com that Tyler would like to “sincerely apologize” for any inconvenience this may have caused his fans.

As previously reported, Tyler hinted to Women’s Wear Daily that a film version of his recently released memoir, “Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?”, could be in the works. Tyler explained, “It’s either as soon as the plane goes down, or in my lifetime. I’m thinking since (director) Ron Howard bought my book, his production company is thinking about doing something.” The singer added, “This whole thing with AEROSMITH has been like a dream come true. It’s like it’s been plotted out and planned and written about before. Every time something happens, I think, ‘Is this a movie?'”

“Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?” debuted at No. 2 on The New York Times hardcover non-fiction best seller list when it came out last May. A paperback edition will arrive in January 2012.

Tyler, whose past addictions to drugs are well-documented, told The Pulse Of Radio that writing the book helped him see how his efforts to balance his career and family life sometimes proved too much to handle. “It’s been a fight between band lifestyle and marriage lifestyle and family lifestyle, and it’s been a real hard juggle making all those work,” he said. “If you don’t think family is a full-time job, then try being in a band and having, you know, four children. It made realize writing this book how hard it all was and why I maybe reached out to substances to make me feel good at the end of the day.”

Speaking about his addictions to People.com when the book first came out, Tyler said, “I blew 20 million. I snorted my Porsche, I snorted my plane, I snorted my house in that din of drugs and booze and being lost.”

AEROSMITH began working in July on its 15th studio album with producer Jack Douglas, who produced several of the group’s early classics, including “Get Your Wings”, “Rocks” and “Toys In The Attic”.

The CD, due out in 2012, will be the group’s first set of original material since 2001’s “Just Push Play” and first studio offering since 2004’s covers CD, “Honkin’ On Bobo”.

Ten Questions with “Actual Size”

1. Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

Well, since I seem to be the talker of the band, I’ll go ahead and do my best to inform and entertain… My names Randy, and I play bass for Actual Size. Much like everyone else in the band, I come from an original music background but have accepted the cover band gig as a nice source of income, not to mention the people watching is second only to Wal Mart at 3AM… Our web existence is facebook.com/actualsizemusic, although Jon will tell you that I can be found on porn sites internationally…

2. Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Wow, let’s see, there are five guys in the band, with five VERY different tastes. Walt (the drummer) would do anything to play in Dream Theater, Brian (vocalist) is a total pop tart. Jon (guitar) is more country and classic rock, while our other guitarist Dave is a completely unapologetic metalhead. I’m the one with the best taste, although it is decidedly British. Give me an infinite supply of Floyd, Radiohead, Muse, etc. and I’ll be content.

3. Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music?

Any pitfalls they should avoid? I was thrown into the fire, playing my first gig within 6 weeks of buying my first bass. It was a blessing and a curse- the urgency of the gig forced me to learn quickly, but I skipped a lot of “basics” on my way to just learning the songs. It took me a long time to fill in the gaps, although all the music theory classes I had definitely helped. I would say the two biggest things to do are 1. Surround yourself with good people, and B. Listen (and play) a wide diversity of styles. You can gain so much just by listening to a variety of artists.

4. Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Hmmm, a toughie, do I try to wow you by mentioning bands I’ve shared the stage with, such as Chevelle, Switchfoot, or Papa Roach? Do I talk about the first time I saw boobs from the stage? (thank you whoever you were, lol) How about I combine the two. We are following Jackyl in Ft Wayne earlier this year. Not only do we have a surreal pre-show conversation with Jesse James Dupree (you just CAN’T do it justice in text, it’s an audible-only thing), but then he proceeds to chainsaw the living hell out of the ceiling above the stage, basking in a shower of asbestos-filled glory, while a not-quite-so-lovely honey of 400 plus pounds in the front row pulls down her tube top. Yeah, maybe not the greatest, but certainly memorable…

5. On the same token as the above question. How about a “worst gig” ever story.

Once again, so many nightmares. Breaking down and never getting to gigs. Driving 20 hours straight to Naples FL in summer with no AC in a van with five dudes (definitely not a scratch and sniff moment). PA’s dying, singers forgetting what their job is

. 6. Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

I’m a photographer, Brian actually never stops singing unless he’s asleep, Jon buys and sells cars on a weekly basis, Walt is apparently the only one of us that cares what he looks like since he’s a gym-rat and can actually see his toes when he looks down, and Dave is practicing being an octogenarian; he is the oldest 30 year old in the world, everything hurts, he can’t eat real food, and he hates everything.

7. What do you think about the present music scene or lack of here in the Evansville area? Care to address that?

It’s a little sad. If you’re doing original stuff, you’re out of luck if you’re above 20, because you have few places to play, and fewer people that care. Even the cover scene is dwindling- with the current economy, people are going out less, so bar owners are less willing to pay. It definitely doesn’t help when you have bands filled with 20 year olds that live in their moms’ basements that will basically play for free beer, or a DJ that will play for almost nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting my groove on to a good DJ, and I love seeing a new enthusiastic band, but have some pride people: know your worth and don’t ruin it for everyone else.

8. Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Well, I kinda already covered that, so I will tell you four lies and one truth, and it is up to your readers to figure it out (or come to a show and I’ll tell you). Walt is of Mexican and Irish descent. Mexicish perhaps? Dave appeared in a porn while he lived in California. Brian has never said a swear word. Jon helped deliver a baby horse. I didn’t get drunk until I was 28.

9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

Oh wow, the wife will kill me on this one. Let me give some pro’s and con’s as I work towards a final coital decision. Mrs. Howell- Pro- Never had an older woman, and they say that they know what they are doing. Con- I might open my eyes. Ginger- Pro- She’s pretty bangin’ (that’s what the kids are saying these days, right?) Con- The high-maintenance ones are wet noodles that don’t try. Mary Ann- Pro- Hot, friendly, and those pigtails….. Con- At some point it would end. Yeah, definitely have a winner with Mary Ann…

Spay and neuter your drummers, people! No wait, that’s not what I meant. I meant to say be careful out there, accidents cause people. No, that’s not it either. Really what I’m trying to say is treat your life like we approach this band; Try to be good, but if that fails, get the most fun out of it that you can and try to spread the joy to as many others as you can.

 

Big bonus question.Where the hell you get the cool band name from?

Oh man, you can blame that on too many hours in a van on a trip to Ft Wayne. There may or may not be an ACTUAL meaning behind it, but it sure sounds good over the mic at a show, “Hello, we are Actual Size!”. Plus it’s a great conversation starter…
