KickActs interviews Nikol!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting

artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the

artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour!

bsWelcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you

can be found at on the web.

I have been on the stage since  forever. When I was old enough to walk, I would follow my older sister up onto stage while she performed a solo in church and when I felt like it I would sing a note, when I didn’t, I’d just stand there with my thumb in my mouth…I just wanted to be ON the stage. I’ve attended Berklee College of Music for Stage Performance and been to AMTC three times. When I was in school I was in every singing group they had (girls ensemble, chorale, chorus) and I played violin for 4 years (when my parents moved us from MA to NC the

school we attended didn’t have an orchestra, so I stopped playing). I bought my first guitar (a black thin-body Martin acoustic/electric) right after I turned 18 and started taking private lessons at Raleigh Music Academy. Since then, I have

opened up for a few fashion shows and have been playing shows at live music venues in Virginia and various cities in North Carolina. My first album just released on

July 30, 2013  it’s available on iTunes, Amazon, etc\’94bittersweet.\’94,

check it out!!\

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Paramore – Hayley WIlliams has an amazing voice and their lyrics are incredible.\

Lacey Sturm – she was the lead singer for Flyleaf (she has since stepped down). i

wish i knew how to scream and sing like that, you know, and still have it sound

good..Christina Aguilera – her voice is unreal. that power, the unending range, and just

overall amazing talent, whoa!!!

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any

pitfalls they should avoid?

stay positive – pitfalls to avoid: all negativity. the more work you put in,

the better your results.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

i played a show in Chapel Hill, NC that was flawless performance-wise. the

energy was really there that night and the crowd was a lot of fun. also, i got

scheduled for a show at a big venue in Raleigh through a booking agency a couple

years back, and was given the wrong time for my set – they changed it when i got to

the venue, so i went from being 3rd or 4th on the lineup to 1st. i went on and only

had a handful of people there to watch because nobody planned on getting there until

much later. when the set time i was originally given came around, i did a little

show for people in the parking lot. that’s one of my favorite nights. the fans

really loved it and i felt good about turning the night around into something

positive.

On the same token as the above question. How about a worse gig story.

i actually just played an acoustic show and completely blew the beginning – i

forgot the words to the verse i was singing, so i moved on to a different one that

made people laugh just by the title – it was a cover by The Downtown Fiction called

“I Just Wanna Run” because that’s what I really wanted to do at that time, haha –

the rest of the show was successful from then on – sometimes all it takes is a

little loosening up

bittersweet album cover

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect

hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

every time i go to a show, i get a tshirt. so i have a collection of band

tshirts. my aunt makes beautiful quilts and she helped me cut and design a concert

tee blanket and i love it. it might be time for tshirt blanket part 2

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

i just kind of hate that schools are cutting music education.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that.

Chris, drums, teaches at the Living Arts School in NC and is a black belt in

Tae Kwon Do. Damien started playing guitar when he was 14 years old and has spent a

lot of time doing volunteer environmental work. Justin has played guitar for over 15

years and likes to kayak. Anthony started playing bass when he 14 and is an avid

mountain biker.

9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you getto hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell, and why?

i would love a vacation on the island!!

Our last question is called  “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and ’93SHOUT IT OUT LOUD’!

keep up with what’s new on www.nikolmusik.com and check out my CD on iTunes:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bittersweet./id668405769\

Nikol is ready to be entered for Ernie Ball’s Battle of the Bands at the beginning

on next year and i would really appreciate the support:

i hope to see you at a show!!!!

What’s your favorite Christmas memory? Here are my few

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

and far in between ones..

xmas5n

Dressing us as twins was soooo wrong….

I have very few Christmas memories and I really don’t know why. There are photographs that prove we really had them and there were always a lot of toys but the memories are buried somewhere in my brain…I still have a few of the toys we got as little kids. The stuffed turtle I still have and the little metal guitar is another one that I have…

But the fond Christmas memories? Where are they at? I remember the cardboard fireplace and the colored wheel that was set up every year. I remember “mom” laying in bed at night and not going to sleep. I also remember hearing the car trunk slam on her car.

Here are a few of mine that I can recall…

One Christmas I do remember clearly was our Uncle Abe and his wife Tina where staying with us. Abe had a thing for guard dogs and he had 2 Doberman pinscher’s always with him. Well, Uncle Abe’s bed was in the front guest room where the Christmas tree was. Christmas morning, we couldn’t go in there to see what we got because Abe was still in bed and the dogs would raise up and start growing at us..So Christmas was put on hold until he decided it was time to get up. Once he got up and the all clear was given to us to inspect our toys from Santa we found that during the night the Doberman pinschers had got down and chewed up some of the toys… One of them being my incredible hulk action figure and the kick stand that came with the football…Those damn dogs…. No apologies or nothing either from the xmas6Uncle..Uncle Abe was one tough Son of Bitch though. He grew up in a different era. His philosophy was this, “If you car has a half of tank of gas, fill it back up”…A few years later his precious attack dogs turned on him and his wife. They were ok but the dogs had to go. Years later when Uncle Abe was actually dying I was there…He told the paramedics to “Let me go goddammit!!”well, he got his wish…I miss the old guy…Hell, he may have only been 52 when he died but lived a lifetime in that short time..

David rocking the hand made cowboy outfit, I still have those and that guitar

When my brother David and I were real little, we had to go to Alabama for a trip to visit some relatives. You know, looking back it may have been Missouri but for some reason Alabama is stuck in my mind. I can see us playing on the sidewalk out in front of the house we were staying …Anyway, it was Christmas time. We worried and worried that Santa wouldn’t be able to find us since we weren’t home for Christmas. We didn’t have to worry. He found us. My brother David and I got a play doh fire truck each. That was all Santa brought.. I would have fared better if it had been a secret decoder ring,Lol. No explanations where given. And nothing was made up for it…A firetruck a piece…

One time for Christmas we received two chopper chain driven big wheel type riding toys. These things were super cool. Big green choppers we could ride. But they were defective. The pedals weren’t welded to the sprocket so neither one of them worked. Santa had let us down… So our Grandpa Buzz took them to where ever you take Santa’s toys back for repairs…And we waited and we waited. We asked where were the cool choppers… No reply…And then they returned…They were under the tree the next Christmas!! Re-gifts! By then we had outgrown them. Can you believe that? They were repaired and kept somewhere until the following Christmas…

xmas1n

David always went first…

About the last Christmas I remember while I was still at home was 1982. I received a Spark-o-matic 8 track tape player for my car! What a great gift! Loved it even though in 1982 8 track tapes were already being phased out to cassettes!

Anyway, there are a few of mine. What about yours?

A Chinese guy is sitting next to a Jewish guy on an airplane.

Out of the blue, the Jewish guy slaps the Chinese guy so hard that his head reverberates.

The Chinese guy asks, “What did you do that for?”

The Jewish guy says, “That was for Pearl Harbor.”

The Chinese guy says, “But Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese.”

The Jewish guy says, “Japanese, Chinese, Korean, it’s all the same to me.”

A few minutes of silence pass when out of the blue the Chinese guy slaps the Jewish guy so hard that HIS head reverberates.

The Jewish guy asks “What did you do that for?”

The Chinese guy says, “That was for the Titanic.”

The Jewish guy says, “But the Titanic was sunk by an iceberg.”

The Chinese guy says, “Steinberg, Goldberg, Iceberg, it’s all the same to me.”

Fear Factor and my Insomnia..

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

dreaming of insomniaWhat do they have in common? I wish I knew. I don’t even watch Fear Factor anymore. But last night for some reason, and I have no idea why, my brain wondered over into the “Fear Factor” lane for most of the night.

I have seen a few of the older shows. Basically it’s a show that pushes contestants to compete against one another in physical, mental and extreme challenges. Whether it is being suspended off a tall building or the “gross facture” most of us have, such as eating old rotten bull testicles or raw sheep eyes. The one I remember hearing about was daring two girls to drink a large glass of donkey semen…It’s the “Fear Factor”…Skip to the 8 minute mark to watch the deed)

Last night as I stared at the ceiling in the dark… I thought about some stunts that the show hasn’t used yet and I wondered …first off, why do I care? And secondly, why am I even thinking about it??? And thirdly, why can’t I stop thinking about it!! It was like a song was stuck in my head…Over and over and over I mulled this ……wait for it…….“over”.

So, what demented stunts did I conjure up you may ask? Just a few…Here is the first one. Fear Factor has strapped contestants to the front of tractor trailers before so why not strap someone to the bow of a ship? You know, right where the water line is just above their nose? Of course they would have to have a breathing apparatus to make sure they don’t drown but can you imagine being that far under water on a boat that is cutting waves?   All that bouncing up and down? You would be under water, above water and back under again over and over…I think that would be a great stunt.

Another one I came up with. Open water. At night.  Alone. Take them out in the ocean with only a small floatation device. Provide them something only big enough for them to cling to but not be able to get up on and leave them over night.  With the jellyfish and other fish investigating them, I think that would also be a good stunt to attempt…

I have saved the best for last…

Take the contestant into a deep underground cave…Sit them on the floor and leave them. And take all sources of light with you so they will be in total darkness… Say for overnight… Not so bad is it? But here’s the catch. Play demonic noises all night. Sounds such as people wailing, ghosts talking…Werewolf sounds…and occasionally sneak up on them and grab them…Of course you would need night vision goggles but I think being in total darkness and having all that go on would be the tough one to overcome..What do you think?

Hopefully tonight I will get some sleep…can I get an Amen???

Attention Nashville/LA/Hollywood/ and life. At 41 he is

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Still relevant. That is Eminem. Of course he established himself at around 27 years old. But he currently has the # 1 single in the Country…

So when Nashville, Los Angeles, Hollywood or life in general  thinks everyone over 30 is washed up and too old to have a career I say to them they can kiss my ass…Do you agree? Don’t put an age or a limit on your dream or your life for that matter.  I am 48 and I see so many people my age literally just dry up and die but go on just “existing”. They have no ambition, no desire. They are stuck in the matrix. They sit at home like elderly people and don’t live. We all know too many people that have already died and I bet if they could talk to them they would say “Just live”. Run another mile, play kick the can, go to the park, let your hair down a little and most importantly of all, get your ass in gear, life is too short. Chase the dream. Chase life. I see on Facebook over and over, people  that are my age or at least close to my age barely living and looking like  they are 100 years old. They are beaten…Some on disability and don’t need it. Some taking Xanax,Vyvanse or Lartabs just to get up or to go to bed or just to deal with life in general. I gotta say WTF…Where is the kid in you? Did you kill it? Did you let someone else kill it?What the hell you gonna do ten years from now? Look worse? Still have a flat spot on your ass from sitting?  Be on what ever hot website at the moment still talking/whing about “dealing with it”…What ever “Dealing with it” means???

Anyway…I get depressed but I snap out of it. and on my own I might add. I am not taking meds “to get by”…Medical meds are one thing, meds to get you “going” is a totally different monster…Dye your hair if you have to..put some paint on the barn… Live..Chase your dreams…As Morgan’s Freeman’s character “Red”  in the “Shawshank Redemption” said…”Get busy living or get busy dying”…Most of you have been dying long enough…

And back to my original theme… Eminem is over 40 and making music and has a #1 song in Country…He is still kicking it so why can’t you…or me???

Here are a few more examples.

Toni Basil. The “Hey Mickey” song. Almost 40 when that song hit big.

Meredith Brooks. The “I’m A Bitch” song from 1997. Was 40 when that song hit it big.

Susan Boyle. At 48, she changed how the world saw her and people like her. I still get chill bumps as I watch the video of her singing “I dreamed a dream” on “Britain’s got talent”. All the judges including Simon Cowell thought they would have a laugh at her expense. In stead, she dropped them dead in their places with her magical voice. Clearly showing you cannot judge a book by its cover …or age.

So… I just kicked the can into your court…What you gonna do about it? Get busy living or get busy dying????

Here is Eminem’s new video featuring Rihanna.

You really can’t beat a husband and wife team that play together like this. I am sure its a rarity but it has to be something special. It seems most are polar opposites.
