Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and were you can be found online.
Hey there, we’re Post Paradise, a cello-driven alternative rock band from Fort Collins, Colorado. You can find us at www.PostParadiseRock.com, or on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, iTunes, Amazon… just about everywhere else too!
Who are your musical heroes and influences? Why?
I think that everything I’ve ever listened to has influenced me in some way. There are bands that I love talking about because I love listening to them and I love what their bands represent. Circa Survive never disappoints, their new record is incredible. I love that Manchester Orchestra has been putting out really interesting rock records and never do the same thing twice. There are so many others that I take little things from.
A musical hero would have to be Billy Corgan. I remember listening to old Smashing Pumpkins records when I was growing up and loving the diversity of them, the guitar tones, the lyrics, just everything. I know some guitarists worship these prolific players from the start, but I don’t think I ever really admired a guitarist until I heard his stuff. It always surprised and intrigued me. Couldn’t get enough. Johnny Greenwood is like that for me as well. Just give me something I haven’t heard before.
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in the music business?
Here’s where I could be funny and tell them to be an accountant instead or something… But the truth of it, like most careers I think, is that this life sort of chooses you. Lots of people opt out after a few years. You really have to love it enough to put it all the time and effort. It’s not always easy and it’s not always fun. But a lot of the times it’s worth it anyway.
What piece of advice did you ignore that you wish you hadn’t?
“Hey don’t buy that van, it’s too old!”
“Ah, it’ll be fine,” I said. “It’ll run just fine,” I said. Whoooooops.
Do you have a greatest gig story or worst gig horror story you’d like to share?
Well, just about every time you head out on the road or even to a local show, you have the chance for some kind of adventure. A few years back we’d thought we’d lost Amy on an island off of Rhode Island when she was sitting 5 feet from us around a corner and we proceeded to search for a few hours because we had no idea. We’ve been stranded in Goodland, Kansas for 4 days playing putt-putt golf non-stop while our van was being repaired and the shop kept ordering the wrong part. We’ve shown up to a gig in Nebraska and the opening band broke up that morning and refused to play, or a gig in Missouri where the soundman never showed and they wouldn’t let us run our own sound…
There have been lots of successes too, but I think the misses are a lot more fun to read about!!
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of peckers or boobs? Make sock puppets? Sit in the dark and eat Cheetos?
I’ve been reading and collecting comic books since I was about 6 years old. That’s pretty awesome, I still enjoy it even though they keep getting more expensive. Oh, and I just bought a new PlayStation so I’m getting back into video games. It’s been my new obsession. Maybe this record won’t come out on time after all…
What do you think about the current music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
Our local scene is amazing. Northern Colorado bands are some of the most talented and cooperative that I’ve ever experienced. We love traveling but we also love coming home. It’s all very supportive.
Overall on a national level, I’m not sure rock is getting the attention that it did 5-10 years ago. Folk has been dominating the alternative radio and now it’s moving a little more towards electronic. It’s fine, it all goes in cycles, but I wouldn’t mind a resurgence of interesting rock music personally.
Do you think reality shows like American Idol, X Factor and The Voice have helped or hurt the music industry as a whole?
Did they have an effect? Maybe on some. I don’t personally watch any of those shows; I have a really hard time with them. I don’t like that it gives the impression that a ‘big break’ is your only option for success. Post P, like a lot of independent bands we know, has more of a ‘Let’s collect a lot of little breaks’ mentality. So I guess if a large amount of people get discouraged from trying music because they’re sitting at home and don’t think they can compete on one of those shows, then yeah, I’d say that’s a negative effect.
What is your opinion of unauthorized music downloads?
Well, it seems like downloading is on the menu and there’s no way to stop it. Apple tried to legitimize downloads with iTunes and I guess that was the way to fight back for a bit. Now streaming is the ‘answer.’
I still buy music. Streaming isn’t really my thing, there are so many options I just get paralyzed and can’t think of what to listen to. For Post Paradise and where we are now? I’m excited any time a fan wants our music. I prefer that they buy a disc at a show because that’s the best way to support us. But if we were bigger and I found out that people were massively downloading our songs from illegal sites? That’s tough. I don’t think the people that are downloading illegally are necessarily your ‘fans.’ They’re fans of that song maybe. But if they like the band enough they would come to a show and buy some merch or get involved. You almost don’t need to worry about those other people that ‘steal’ your music. There’s not much you can do about it anyway and they probably don’t matter in your world in the long term.
Tell us something about you/each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear.
None of us knew each other before this band. I found all of this band’s members online, Craigslist and such. I tell other bands that and they can’t believe it. You hear all the horror stories about that sort of thing. Somehow I just found really great and talented people. We’re all on a similar wavelength and have been getting along well and having a blast for the last 3 years.
Hypothetical situation. You’re on Gilligan’s Island and you get to hook up with only one of the survivors… Which one and why?
Ah, the old Mary-Ann vs Ginger question, a classic… I probably haven’t seen that show in a decade, but I’m pretty sure when I still had TV, my answer would’ve been Mary-Ann. Yeah, definitely.
Do you know what a vinyl album is and have your ever purchased one? If so, what was it?
Ha! Yes, I own a decent amount of vinyl. I know that the popular opinion is that is sounds better and warmer, but I also enjoy it because it makes you work for it. I only buy vinyls of records that I enjoy from start to finish. This is because you have to get up every 3 or 6 songs to turn it over and go through that whole process. It’s not easy to just skip a song so you’re stuck with it. I love that about it. You have to know what you’re doing for the next 45 minutes before you sit down to listen. There’s some charm to that, you better be ready to appreciate the work and love that went into that entire ALBUM. And yeah, sure, maybe it sounds better, haha.
You’re marooned on an island with Justin Bieber. Do you choke him out the first night in his sleep or what?
That’s a good question. I know that I probably have heard his stuff somewhere, but I couldn’t tell you what one of his songs sounds like. I just hear about how everyone hates him because he acts like a jerk or they want him deported back to Canada or whatever. The rest of the world must think we’re just one big reality TV show. And they might be right…
What is your opinion of Miley Cyrus?
Ah… that’s a good question. I see Miley Cyrus as a lens through which to view the music business’s big media machine. You can learn so much about marketing and trends through the examples that she and her team set. Of course, it might be something you didn’t want to learn
Which would you rather hear in concert? Lip-synching or real vocals?
Always real vocals. I don’t care what the circumstances are. I paid my money and… you know what? To be honest, I don’t think that the bands I go to see, mostly rock band and the like would do the lip-syncing thing so it’s kind of a non-issue. That seems like something that reserved for the big pop acts that are flying on wires over the arena and then jumping into their big dance number. They’re entertainers.
Who, or what, is the next big thing?
Sounds like Crystal Clear Pepsi is making a come back? I bet that’ll kill!
One artist you can’t get enough of and can’t live without is… Why?
I am a huge fan of Circa Survive. Each one of us in the band probably has our own band/artist that we can’t live without, but for me personally, I can’t get enough of their music or live shows. Every record they put out pushes the limits of what you thought could be done with rock music. It’s so enjoyable to me to be following a band for such a long time and always be pleasantly rewarded release after release.
Confession time. Share a secret about yourself.
Ok, a musical secret. I really enjoy listening to Katy Perry AND Lana Del Rey. There, I said it. Phew, that’s so liberating!
Favorite movie of all time and why?
Jaws. Has been for a long time and I don’t know what a movie would have to do to knock it off of its perch at the top. It’s got everything. Just looking at it as Spielberg’s art, it’s a real masterpiece. He created a whole different kind of horror movie.
Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!
Hmmm let’s see where’s that soapbox…? Here we go. Hey everyone reading this: GO SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SCENE. It’s where it all starts. Wherever you are, you have local bands. Check them out. They might be pretty good. Spend that $5 to see those 3-4 bands. Support your local venues too. The only reason we were able to get this band going is because we have such a great support system in the town that we started. I always say it; you can’t have a great music scene without great music fans.

Hard to believe that Fat Albert and the gang, a show I definitely enjoyed as a kid, seems to had a serial rapist in the mist :-(.
Here is Janis’s story from her Facebook page. By the way in case you didn’t know it, she is a heck of an artist. Do your home work kids….If all you listen to is EDM and corporate created junk, your missing out on the real meaning of music.

Thank you all for the response to my “Cosby memory”. Someone pointed out that by starting it with the New York Magazine link, people sharing it would only be able to share the link, not the text. So here it is again, with a different format.

Do I have a stake in this issue? Yes. Of course. Outside of being female, outside of knowing women aren’t “heard” as loudly as men are heard, outside of firmly believing that if women were treated equally around the world, many if not all of the world’s problems would no longer exist – outside of all that… I have a personal stake.
No, I was not sexually bothered by Bill Cosby. We met because he was curious about me.
My song “Society’s Child” was climbing the charts and creating a great deal of controversy. The Smothers Brothers took a huge gamble and had me on their hit television show. I was just sixteen years old when we taped it. I’d been on the road for months, doing press and one-nighters. My chaperone/tour manager, a family friend six or seven years older than me, was doing everything in her power to make sure I was protected and getting as much rest as possible.
Remember. I was sixteen. Still in high school. Fairly naive, including about my own sexuality. For months on the road, my chaperone was the only consistent face I saw. Everyone else was a complete stranger – radio personalities, newspaper reporters, magazine photographers, audiences, promoters, disc jockeys, all strangers. So I clung to my chaperone.
We’d never been to a big-time TV taping. We had no idea we’d have to be inside from early early morning until whenever they called for me. There were only a couple of chairs for us on the set – I was pretty low on the totem pole, way lower than Jimmy Durante or Pat Paulsen or Mason Williams (all of whom were wonderful to us). And I was exhausted. I’d been having nightmares for weeks, the result of the controversy surrounding “Society’s Child” and the death threats I was receiving daily. I needed to sleep. So I fell asleep in my chaperone’s lap. She was earth motherly, I was scared. It was good to rest.
We taped the show. I had a ball. (You can see it on Youtube, in fact. That’s me, looking scared, in the green dress. My friend Buffy from East Orange, where I’d started high school, made it for me. I treasured it.) Then we went back to New York, and I went back to school.
A while later, my manager called me into her office. “What happened at the Smothers Brothers show?!” I had no idea what she was talking about, and said so. “Well, no one else on TV is willing to have you on. Not out there, anyway.” Why? I wondered. And was told that Cosby, seeing me asleep in the chaperone’s lap, had made it his business to “warn” other shows that I wasn’t “suitable family entertainment”, was probably a lesbian, and shouldn’t be on television.
Again, a reminder. I was 16. I’d never slept with a man, I’d never slept with a woman. Hell, I barely been kissed, and that in the middle of the summer camp sports area, next to the ping pong table.
Banned from TV. Unbelievable. Bless Johnny Carson and his producer Freddy de Cordova, one of the nicest men I’ve ever worked with, because they didn’t listen. Or maybe they didn’t give a damn. I don’t know. I do know that they broke the barrier Cosby tried to create.
There’s a lot to bother a sensible person about this. The years these women were ignored. The years they were derided. That the story finally really “broke” because a male comedian named Hannibal Buress kept bringing it up, kept calling Cosby a “rapist”. Not because woman after woman after woman went to the police, to the press, to anyone who’d listen, with horribly similar stories.
Let me be snarky for a moment. Interesting that there are so few women of color in the New York Magazine photo. Interesting that the ones in the photo all appear to be light-skinned. Perhaps darker skinned women have not come forward yet? Perhaps they’re among the other 12 women who’ve accused him but aren’t pictured?
Or perhaps not. I have to wonder if this rapist has some issues with his own race.
Continuing the snarkiness, I find it horrifying that his wife is still insisting it was all consensual. That she sounds more upset by “the invasion of privacy” than the rapes.
People seem to be confused because she continues to stand by him. I have just two words for that – money, honey. According to the press, she’s his manager, and has been for years. And his “business manager”, eg the person who handles the money. So if there were pay-offs, she saw the checks. She is complicit.
If it was consensual, why pay anyone to be silent?
If it was consensual, why are there so many women who do not want money, who do not need fame, who are by turns ashamed, violated, exposed, vulnerable, and still continue to speak out?
Cosby was right in one thing. I am gay. Or bi, if you prefer, since I dearly loved the two men I lived with over the years. My tilt is toward women, though, and he was right about that.
But what an odd thing, that a black man who slept with so very many white women chose to take my possible lesbianism away from our one meeting, rather than the message I tried to get across with “Society’s Child.” How pathetic. How truly, truly pathetic.

Florida, Family, Fun Times and More! (A great read!)

Our family started going to Florida for vacation starting way back in 1997. Back then, our now adult kids’ were little kids. We didn’t have much money but we thought they all should experience Disney World at least once in their lives as kids. I remember going to Florida as a kid in 1976 and not being able to go to Disney World. My family went to St. Petersburg and we were “that close” but Mom said “no”. So we didn’t go. It would have been cool to ride the 20,000 Leagues under the Sea submarine or watch the Mickey Mouse club gang being film but it wasn’t meant to be.
Fast forward some. So, we started the yearly family trips back in 97. We packed lunches since we really couldn’t afford to feed a family of five at Disney World. The kids never knew the financial struggle we had. My wife and I kept it secret. Granted back then the ticket pricing was different so we did convince our son Josh that he really was only 5 years old instead of 7 to get a ticket price break. We also had our oldest daughter Crystal who was 14 at the time to say she was 10. Again for a break on ticket prices. We had to do what we had to do. Britt was 10 so we kept her ticket honest. The kids had a great time in between the sandwiches and rides. All good memories.
So that was the start of something we have done almost every year since then. A family trip to Florida. Orlando was the “mecca”. We went to Ole Town in Kissimmee too. It was cheaper and not as crowded. The kids got older. We looked for hotel discounts etc. But we went. Family time was and still is, that important.
About 12 years ago or so my wife Denise’s boss owned a condo in Madeira beach. He rented it out when he wasn’t using it. Well, he let us use it. I hadn’t been to the St. Petersburg area since 1976. Once we got to Madeira beach it was love at first sight. It wasn’t a tourist trap but it had things the whole family could do. John’s Pass was right across the street from her boss’s condo (located in Madeira Norte’.) Our kids could go across the street to the shops or to the pier. We went deep sea fishing and dolphin sighting. Our kids and now grandkids love the Candy Kitchen!
Madeira basically became our second home. We go every year. The kids could go to the beach. As they got older they would bring a friend or two. Then as they got married. They, along with their spouses and kids would also make the trip with us.
As the days turned into nights my wife and I would go across the street to a little bar called the Bamboo Beer Garden. It was a small friendly place and the walls and ceilings were covered in dollar bills. Signed and dated by the patrons and pinned in any open space one could find. We started our tradition too. We would go over there for a night cap. Reflect on the day. Make small talk with the others that were there. Tip the bartender and sign and date a dollar and add it to the collection. At that time Muffy the DJ would also do her karaoke act there. She wore poodle skirts and well the wind one time…Well we enjoyed watching her perform. It seemed like the people of Madeira Beach had something special in their mist. Our kind of place.
We did this every year. We would make the long drive to Florida. Rent a condo as close to John’s Pass as we could get and pull back on the throttle of life. Nice beaches, nice people. And more importantly not over run by tourists. Though I guess we were “technically tourists, or snowbirds”, we really considered it “ours too”.
Time, like it does, doesn’t stop for anyone and moves on. The Bamboo Beer Garden was sold. The name was slightly changed. It’s now called the Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill. And it was expanded for more seating. They now have outdoor seating. Long gone are the probably hundreds of dollars on the walls and ceiling. I remember calling from Kentucky before we left a couple of years ago just to make sure it was still open. (It has that kind of cool atmosphere.) The new owners (They have owned it for a few years now) always recognize us when we show up which is amazing!
This June, as we do yearly, we rented condos at Madeira Norte’. Packed up and pointed all the vehicles toward our home away from home. Madeira Beach. We arrived on Saturday, and checked in. After we got settled in the family all headed to the Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill. I think I failed to mention they serve food too! Great food and it doesn’t cost and arm or a leg. We had a large group and they made sure to accommodate us. The waiters pushed tables together so we all could eat together close to the stage.
The entertainer that night was Mark Mann. A one man acoustic act. I enjoy listening to real musicians far more than a jukebox. That night Mark was killing it. A great show. He really entertains the crowd. He was also taking requests. I am an old school music kind of guy for the most part and requested “Sylvia’s Mother”. An old Dr. Hook song that my wife really likes to hear. It’s a great song and if you have never heard it before, check it out here. Up until that night at “the Boo”, no one that I ever requested to play the song would play it, or even heard of it for that matter. Well, Mark Mann not only knew it, he pulled it off! It was awesome! Another favorite song of mine is “Taxi” by Harry Chapin. He was such a great writer and story teller. I asked Mark Mann if he knew it and BAM! I was listening to him do “Taxi”. Mark Mann was knocking them out of the ball park to use an old Kentucky term! Mark Mann was a super nice guy and in between his sets he would come over and talk to us. We talked about the music life, our families and more. Like we had known each other for years! He was such a cool guy! Later on that night he invited me up to sing backup vocals on The Eagles “Take it easy”. I was road weary and a few beers deep but I felt honored that he allowed me the opportunity to sing with him. Most Musicians don’t share the stage even for one song. Mark Mann was different. No egos or attitudes, just a good time had by all.
See that’s the kind of place Madeira is. Nice people. Nice places to go. The Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill and Mark Mann helped start off our family vacation perfectly. My wife and I hope to retire there some day soon.
What started off as five people in an old car back in the 90’s has grown into 14 people so far! We’re already planning next year’s trip! We are looking forward to The Boo” and hopefully Mark Mann will be in the area playing!
