My review of Peter Criss’s book “Makeup to Breakup: My Life In and Out of Kiss

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

In a short sentence I would have to think Peter thought to himself and said “Everyone under the bus!”. Meaning he threw everyone under the bus. I think every bridge he could burn he burnt in this book. Is it a bad thing? I dunno, not my call or my friends that got tossed under the bus.

So far I have read all three books from the Kiss Klan that has released one. Seems to be a bit of dogging on each other in all the books but it seems Peter is the most honest and as far as I can tell, holds nothing back, including grudges.

But now it’s Paul’s turn to release one 🙂 I still think they should have released them all with the “solo” album covers!

I highly recommend this book. It’s definitely drugs, sex, drugs, sex, drugs, sex, and rock and roll.

Here are some of the Highlights according to Peter.

Tommy Thayer made $25,000 a night during the reunion tour and Peter was paid $10,000. (page 193)

It’s implied several times in the book that Paul Stanley bats for both teams if you know what I mean. (page 50 for one)

Gene Simmons has Herpes and had a serious outbreak and Doc Mcgee had to buy Shannon Tweed a big stone to help her get over it. (page 169)

Peter had a lot of orgies with Ace.  Sweet sweet Connie and Ace both uh “sung into Peter’s mic”  at the same time. (page 76)

About the only complaint I have about the book is it’s a little slow taking off and the photographs at the end are lame. Other than that it’s a must read for rock fans. It shows the unglamorous life of a rock star. From their humble beginnings to the top of the world and the fall back down and the eventual leveling out of everything if they live long enough.

Music going back to analog recording? Paul Stanley chimes in.

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

The last Foo Fighters album was recorded on analog, too. Are you expecting others to do the same?
Yeah, when it becomes clear that people have strayed from what the essence of what we’re doing. As a matter of fact, I was talking to Dave Grohl this morning when we dropped our kids off at school. He’s doing a documentary [about the studio Sound City], on the great history of it. The music and the people it inspired were recorded on tape. They didn’t have pedal boards where you push a button on the right and it gives you cappuccino. Gear that looks like Star Trekisn’t what any of our heroes played on. If you can’t get a great sound with your guitar plugged into an amp, you need a new guitar or a new amp.

My review of Kiss’s new album “MONSTER”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

So there is a leaked copy of it floating around the net, so I checked it out…

First off. I am a huge KISS fan from way back when they ruled the world. I stuck with them from ALIVE 1and through the disco era “Dynasty” which I thought was a great album by the way. I even forgave them for the “Unmasked” album which did have a couple of good songs on it. One being “A world without Heroes”. I even stuck by them and watched them “unmask” on MTV like millions of other people did. I was in there when Peter quit/got canned and I continued going to see them despite Eric Carr (GOD rest his soul) playing wayyyy to fast on the drums. I was at the show in Evansville Indiana when Vinnie ( plays too fast too) Vincent pushed his amps over and KISS left his ass in parking lot and moved on after the show. I hung in there. I was still there when Grudge took over and songs like “Unholy” was blasting on the radio. Great stuff. Then came the farewell tour. I was still there. I remember Julio Wallace and me driving all night back from a gig in Michigan just to get to Evansville the next day to catch the show.

Then came the extended farewell tour. And another tour. Hell, I even bought the new KISS comics. Then came Psycho Circus”. I even got that. Then Peter and Ace quit/got canned. I get all that. That’s business. I didn’t like it but its not my business.  And then my hope and loyalty started waning…But I still went and saw the show.

Then came KISS “Boom”. more like a fizzle…. Not the band I grew up basically worshiping. More tours, more merchandise, etc. I get it but I no longer subscribe to it. Maybe I am growing up. I wish I wasn’t. I mean this is the band I would have, like most kids my age back in the late 70’s. would have helped KISS invade a small Country if they asked us to.

And now “MONSTER”. The hype machine is in full swing. “It’s a classic KISS album”. “Just four guys writing together”. etc, etc, etc…

So I checked out the leaked copy. You know what? MONSTER should have been called MONSTER LAME”. The song “Hell or Hallelujah”. That’s a great song. Reminds me of the KISS I grew up with. But after that the album just loses steam, tanks and falls over dead. I hear a bunch of fillers and songs they will never play again.

Maybe its time bands just released powerful singles one at time. The old album way of doing things is over. I am sad about it. But the songs just don’t hold up. No hits…

I don’t expect KISS to reinvent the wheel. I know they are no longer starving and it shows. A band that is starving has the “Us against the world attitude”. KISS doesn’t has that. They haven’t had it for a long time. It’s not their fault. They have been mega successful. But I think its time to hand the      baton off to someone else as bad as I hate to say that. I will go ahead and say Motley Crue needs to do the same thing but that’s another story.

So to finish off my review. KISS meant everything music to me. This album doesn’t cut it. Save your money or do something good with it. Maybe send it to “Wounded Warriors” in honor of KISS. KISS Supports that group and I commend them on that.

tears are falling…

I miss my KISS…

sincerely,

chuck

The “Beached” Boys…What’s the deal Mike Love?

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

You guys all grew up together and basically set the whole “Surfing” craze into motion with your harmonies and California style music and here at the 50 year anniversary you sack all of them again? That’s not very “Love” of you. Like my friend Al said, you make the guys in KISS look like Indian blood brothers.

You guys are all in your late sixties and early seventies…couldn’t you have just rode this wave out on an up note? 🙁

Gene Simmons “Family Jewel’s” or is it “Family Jew’s” (joking) gets axed…

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Gene’s show has been handed the pink slip. Of course he puts his usual spin on it but it’s aver after 7 years. After my friend was an extra on it a few years ago and I found out it was all scripted, well that done me in on believing any of it… Now if they will just axe of the rest of these silly “reality” shows on the this A& E channel and the other channels, TV would be much better… Operation Repo, Pawn Stars, Hard Core Pawn, and every Cajun, redneck, big foot, U.F.O wedding, vacation, baby,,etc..well, you get the picture..

Reality TV viewers won’t have Kiss frontman Gene Simmons to kick around anymore.

After seven seasons — leaving it with a longer run than ‘I Love Lucy’ or ‘The Honeymooners’ — ‘Gene Simmons Family Jewels’ has received its pink slip from the A&E Network. While the show never drew huge numbers, it was a genuine ratings phenomenon for the cable network, which has seen its profile rise considerably in recent years, largely thanks to the notoriety that tends to come with pointing a camera at Gene Simmons.

“For seven great seasons, Gene, Shannon, Nick and Sophie have been part of the A&E family, and we could not be more proud of the unparalleled run of ‘Gene Simmons Family Jewels,’” the network said in a statement originally issued exclusively to the Hollywood Reporter. “On behalf of everyone at A&E, we’d like to thank the production team at Thinkfactory Media, Gene and his amazing family for their partnership, collaboration and for opening up their lives, warts-and-all, to us throughout the years.”

“Power Chord: One Man’s Ear-Splitting Quest To Find His Guitar Heroes”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

This new book due out July 31st, 2012 sounds interesting as hell.

http://www.harpercollins.com/

Power Chord is the story of one man’s epic pilgrimage to gain rock enlightenment from the gods and guitar heroes of the Golden Age of heavy metal. Author Scott McKenzie set off to make contact with the legendary metal superstars he worshipped in his rural Kentucky youth—men like George Lynch of Dokken, Glen Tipton of Judas Priest, and Ace Frehley of KISS—hoping to gain wisdom and a better understanding of the electric guitar mystique. The result is a veritable treasure trove of enthralling behind-the-scenes stories and “where are they now” revelations that will delight anyone who has ever felt a Mötley Crüe, Guns ’N’ Roses, or Black Sabbath song reach out from the speakers and grab them by the ears.
