July 29th, 2013 is our next Black Diamond Studios Bike Night. Last year in response to the motorcycle community’s wanting for a bike night in Henderson, we answered the call. Since we are a family friendly studio & our customers bring their children here with them, this is an alcohol free event & many of you commented to us that you liked that about our bike nights so you are comfortable to bring your children or that there was a bike night that you could come to because you had alcohol problems in the past and no longer wish to be around alcohol. We hire in a D.J. , prepare food, have to get additional permits for each bike night, and my crew spends countless man hours talking to local small businesses & picking up door prizes & gift certificates from them. We do all of this out of our love for the motorcycle community & to help other area small businesses that you may or may not have heard of to grow. With all of this being said, it is with a heavy heart that I have to say that our July 29th bike night may be our last. We started out doing our bike nights last year doing them every 2 weeks to test the waters to see how much participation we would have with the intent of things really kicking off & switching to every week this year. Our first 3 bike nights were great, as each week drew more bikes. During that time we had a request for games, so we added 2 sets of corn hole boards. On the 3rd week, someone mentioned a bike show. As we started preparations for bike shows, the crowds started to drop off, even though we got more & more prizes to give away. Sadly it got to the point that we had to fall back to once a month this year instead of stepping up to weekly like we had hoped to. This past Monday was our 2nd bike night for 2013. We had 12 bikes & were getting really disheartened before the first bike finally showed. All together, we have taken over $3,000.00 in losses. If our next bike night doesn’t show significant improvement & grow enough to break even, I am sorry, but we will have to discontinue this event.

WITH

DAVE FOWLER

Dave Fowler bio

Dave knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a bass player. Growing up and playing with musicians like Warren Haynes in Western North Carolina helped Dave understand the importance of being a bass player and the role a bassist must play to be in successful bands.

Dave attributes much of his seat of the pants education by playing with older more experienced player as a teenager and always listening to what was going on around him…of course being able to work with names like Dolly Parton, Cinderella, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tracy Lawrence, Lorrie Morgan, Dottie West, Edwin McCain, legendary producer Bill Szymczyk (The Eagles) and many others require just as much in the “people skills” area as the playing side of things. That is what you will be able to learn @ Dave’s clinics for Spector basses. He will give you a information on how to play your instrument and make a living doing it. Dave’s entire approach is seat of the pants hardcore learning how to do it the hard way…and you can cash in on his experience by attending his clinic at ABBA’S MUSIC, 7 PM THURSDAY NOV. 15. Dave has a wealth of information in addition to his playing skills–topics covered will be informational to all players, keyboardist, guitarist and singers as well as bass players. Information such as the Nasville numbering system, how to make a living in the music business, studio production, session work, and Dave will answer any questions you might have.

There is no cost to attend this special event, seating is limited so come early to get the best seating.

Gotta say Hell yea! To Bruce Dickinson!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

HE gets it! The inner child forever rocking and screw the world!

Dickinson said, “Mature our image? Why? Inside this 53-year-old exterior — 54 in August — is a 17-year-old. Actually, probably mental age, probably slightly younger. But that’s the core of why you do this thing. When you’re a kid and you experience something that makes you feel, ‘Wow, walking on air.’ The first song you write, the first experiences, you have to ringfence those and guard them against what I can describe as the cynicism of the world, because the world eats into people and destroys those hopes and those dreams and things like that. And it’s those things that people call childish, those are the things, actually, that motivate us and that keeps our creativity precious; that’s what’s inside people, and they lose it at their peril. I’ve seen people that have lost it, and it’s really sad.

Ok fellow musicians, when is enough, enough?

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

You have played your entire life but have grown weary of the never ending starting and stopping of bands and band attempts…The in between bands and everything thing else associated with this business…Maybe you are like me and was in a road band too for some time …we did it for almost five years..That was 8 years ago when that stopped…I haven’t been able to find anyone or enough people to try it again…Why? I guess the older we all get the harder it is to commit to something like that. My kids are grown so it’s easier for me to. I don’t know how you feel about it but I was never one to be satisfied just playing local bars and clubs. Have I done it? Oh yea, a bunch, I am not arrogant to think I am better than playing those types of places I just wanted more… I have played in dives and nice places and had good times but I always wanted more… It was never enough….an evil drug I always say…

I will play anywhere anytime but I always wanted more….huge stages, not fame and fortune or rock star status…That’s all fleeting…I just wanted to play and make a decent living out of it…

So here I am…46. Still have the “look” I guess?  I go to blabbermouth.com and see all the older bands on that site. They all have the tired hair and big gut look. Not my idea of a “rock star” but they are older and some probably way older than me… They too were probably “metal heads” in the 80’s. Hanging on, mid level bands at best but doing what they love to do so is it fulfilling? I dunno…I am at a loss here… Music, it’s all I have ever cared about other than my family…I was never content with what I have done or accomplished which in the music business is not much. But here I stand at the cliff edge. Do I jump or do I throw my guitars over the edge and say fuck it…not a bad run but not what I tried so hard to achieve…

I am not looking for sympathy here. Just honest questions. What do you do when all you know to do is what you want to do but not doing do it? I don’t want to be the tired looking old fat guy that stayed too long at the dance but damn I don’t want to quit either…
