Letcher Paranormal Investigations “Eastern Kentucky”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

On August 24th we did in an investigation in a well-known cemetery, in a neighboring county. The cemetery itself was one of the first racially integrated cemeteries in Kentucky, and one of the crowed cemeteries i have ever seen.(People are literally buried on top of one another) The cemetery is also listed on the Historical Landmark directory, and has a few historical figures buried there that will remain name-less due to the privacy of the cemetery. During our investigation one of our investigators, Alison Fields, heard a buzzing noise flying around her head. (which possibly could have been an insect but I’m including it for what happens next) No insect was seen and the buzzing didn’t stop even though she was moving her hands around her head to try to smack the supposed insect. One of our other investigators, Donald Fields, was standing close to Alison, with the EMF in his hand when the meter went crazy and spiked to almost 8 milligauss. ( It should be noted that there were no power lines in this location of the cemetery and the battery in the EMF was brand new, and Alison and donald did not have any other electronic equipment that could have gave a false EMF reading) One of our lead investigators, Chris Caudill took this picture after the EMF meter spiked. The first picture is genuine and has not been manipulated in anyway. The second picture is the same only it has been brightened.

The big catch no one was smoking it was 70 degrees and it was a clear sky

“Before I (Chris), snapped the picture Alison Fields was feeling something go through her. Also we had a temp reading of 66.6 and afterward I had 3 scratches on my right forearm from something we can’t explain.  The evp we have you can hear plain as day say “tell them””

Thanks,

Ghost Story # 2…Keith Alvey’s Ghost Story

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

wart Here it goes. Back in 1994 my brother drug me off to go deer hunting at the Higginson Henry wildlife preserve.I didn’t want to go, not my idea of a fun Sunday afternoon. It was November,  still slightly warm and sunny. We walked about 2 miles back into the forest.we came to a clearing ,basically a field surrounded by woods on all sides. We both set down up against trees facing the south end of the field,id say it was about 3 o’clock . As we set and waited my brother soon passed out asleep. I however had the pleasure of setting and staring at the opposite end of the woods. Soon I began to notice something strange about a tree at the opposite end of the field.
I was probably at least a football field away from the tree so I could make it out with the naked eye. It appeared that out of the left hand side of the tree… a boar’s head was sticking out of the tree. I pulled my rifle up so I could look through the scope and I could make out the tusk, snout, eyes and ears of a huge boar. But the odd thing is the tree was only probably 3 feet across so I should have been able to see the boars ass end and hind legs. But of course I couldn’t or this would have just been a story about me seeing a stupid wild pig.
I set and contemplated shooting …but as an avid Stephen king reader I contemplated what if whatever I was looking at didn’t die if I shot  and as the sunlight grew dimmer the head of this thing seemed to be slowly moving from the side of the tree to actually facing me .
It was now near dusk, the light was slowly dieing and my fucking brother was just snoring away. I peeped into the scope again and sure enough the boar was staring me eye to eye and the thing I recall about the eyes was that they where a dim green.
Something was still telling me not to shoot and then just to make things even more fucked up I looked up and saw a nice fat full moon rising in the sky. That’s when I noticed that the naked tree branches began to make the shapes of skulls….not just faint I guess if you look at a certain way it looks like a skull ….but no doubt about it skulls.
Finally though as if by some act of God my brother woke up and asked if I’d seen anything. I said no cause I just wanted to get the hell outta there.
I didn’t look back I just hurried out of the woods. It’s really hard to actually explain what I saw. I wasn’t on drugs… No drinky. Nothing… Stone cold sober. I have never gone back to Higgingson Henry and really dont want to.

Ten Questions With Union Shovel

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

1. How did the band get started?

Scott: Dustin and myself were playing in Rebel Fuel Tank.  At the same time I was playing with Chris and Darr (who I knew from the Fourskinz) in the Jimtown Rats.  When Rebel Fuel Tank decided to take a break I asked Dustin, Chris & Darr if they would be interested in jamming on some original songs … they were down and the rest is history.  Another interesting fact is that Chris had seen Rebel Fuel Tank play about 2 years earlier at Lanhucks and told his wife “I was born to play with these guys” and that he knew we would jam one day.  It’s all been a very organic and natural process.

2. How many members are in the band, and who are they?

There are 4 members:
Jeff Darr – bass, backing vocals
Chris Ellis – drums, backing vocals
Scott McClure – lead and rhythm guitar
Dustin White – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica

3. Do you like doing covers, or would you rather do your own thing, and why?

Chris: I like doing covers and kinda making them our own.  Nothing too obvious.

Scott: I like doing covers as long as they are songs we actually like.  I wouldn’t play a cover that I wouldn’t listen to on my own.  However, I prefer playing originals much more.  I think we have four great songwriters in Union Shovel and I get much more emotion and satisfaction out of playing something we created as opposed to just copying what someone else has already done.  I want to create something new … not just rehash what’s been done before us.

4. What is the inspiration for the name Union Shovel?

Scott:  When I moved back to Evansville I started jamming with Dustin and Andy Watkins – my bass player from a previous band.  To pay the rent Andy was digging graves in between playing out.  One day he and I were jamming and writing songs when we just happened to glance over at the shovel he brought home from work that he was digging graves with.  I just spit out Union Shovel and that was that.  When Chris and Darr started jamming with me and Dustin we thought of several different names and ended up going back to Union Shovel.  I think it’s kinda of cool because in a way the name was based in death and to re-name the band with Dustin as Union Shovel it’s almost like a re-birth.  It’s kind of a cool irony I think.

5. How long has the band been together?

Scott:  the current lineup of Union Shovel has been together for about six months, but I have been jamming with Dustin for going on 12 years and Darr and Chris were together for several years in the Fourskinz so in terms of chemistry and tightness it feels and sounds like we’ve been together much longer.

6. What is your favorite song to do, and what song(s) do you get a lot of requests to do?

Darr:  My favorite would be our original “Plows” … I hear a lot of requests for “Snake Farm”

Scott:  My favorites would be two of our originals … “Plows” because it’s such a big song and “Flood Plains” because it’s so intense but at the same time very melodic. (keep an eye out for them on the upcoming CD)

Chris:  “Snake Farm” because it just sounds nasty … and pretty much is

7.  Is it hard to get gigs that let you do only originals?

Chris:  Most places want to hear the same ol’ regurgitated covers that most of the bands are out there playing now so it’s nice to get to be in a band that doesn’t have to rely on such gimmickery.  Is that a word?

Scott:  I agree with Chris 100% … I started playing music to create it … not to mimic it and I love that we have the ability to craft quality songs in this band.  It does make getting gigs harder and you don’t make as much money but there are also positives — when someone likes our band it’s because they like the music we created not just liked our karaoke version of a song they like on the radio.  It has also allowed us to meet a lot of other great original musicians by splitting shows with them as opposed to playing cover songs for 3 hours every night.

8. Who are your musical inspirations?

Darr: Geezer Butler, John Paul Jones, Les Claypool

Chris: Influenced by everything from Hank to Hendrix from the Beatles to Slayer

9. What type of gear do you use?

Darr: Alvarez 4 string, Peavey BW 115

Chris: Mostly broken and scarred

Scott: a 1960 VOS Custom Les Paul, a 1960 Marshall cab (4×12), and a Marshall JCM 100 watt head as well as a rainbow of effect pedals

10. Why do you play music?

Darr: I’ve been playing half my life – I don’t know what I’d do without it

Chris: Because I have to

Scott:  I think Chris and Darr said it best.  I have no choice.  I love music too much … it’s in my soul … it’s not enough to just listen to it.  I have to learn it, create it and live it … and that still doesn’t satisfy my hunger for music.  It’s my food.

Union Shovel Shouts It Out Loud

Scott:  We’ve got a lot of exciting things going on in the Shovel.  We are writing some of the best songs I’ve ever been involved with and I get pumped up like a kid in a candy store every time we get together.  We are recording a CD of our originals now and it will be finished soon.  Keep your eyes on our site and the News4U for upcoming shows, previews of new songs and how you can get your hands and ears on ’em.

Finally, thanks to everyone who comes out and supports us.  We’ve got some diehards (who know who they are) and they are like family to us.  Keep comin’ and we’ll keep playin’.

Interview with Katie Champion

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

2847_1004700175610_1768063647_3716_3656044_n1. Katie, welcome to KickActs.com. Tell everyone a little bit about yourself.

Well, I am a junior at Henderson County High School. I’ve lived in Henderson since December of 2000. I was born in Fort Worth, Texas. I’ve pretty much had music surrounding me my entire life. My dad’s parents are both
professional musicians and are still playing. My grandmother, Evalyn Champion, has always been there to help me with music and with my vocal training. She’s really taught me a lot. My dad has really helped me a lot
with guitar and with my repertoire. He is always bringing me new music to listen to or to learn. I have inherited the weirdest music library from him. One minute, Radiohead will be playing, the next Jimmy Page and the Black Crows, then Eva Cassidy, then Richard Thompson, then Lyle Lovett. It’s really crazy but I love it!

2. You perform frequently at En El Rio’s in Henderson Kentucky. How has the crowd there responded to you?

I feel like they have responded okay. They’re a fairly regular crowd. I feel
comfortable trying new songs out on them. Recently I sang “Ain’t No Rest For
The Wicked” by Cage the Elephant and a woman came up to me afterwards and
said “Oh I really loved that Ani D’Franco song you did! I’m a huge fan of
hers!” I just smiled and said “I didn’t play any Ani D’Franco.” She was
astonished. It was kind of funny. Some of the stuff I really like playing
doesn’t really fly there, like “Like a Star” by Corrine Bailey Rae. But I’ve
definitely gotten a feel for what’ll fly and what won’t.

3. You have also performed in Nashville. How did that go and what was it
like singing in the Country Music Capitol of the world? Did you meet anyone
famous while you were there?

I actually haven’t performed in Nashville yet. (oops, my bad, I thought your Dad said you did…editor)I’m currently working with Dad on some originals to take down there to the Songwriter’s Night. I’m excited to get down there! Dad has played there and I think he actually saw Taylor Swift before she was famous!

4.Who are you musical heroes and why?

Oh gosh… there’s just so many! I’d have to say my top few are Sheryl Crow,
Bonnie Raitt, Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders, Adele, and The Greencards
because they all have really unique music. They have all found a niche that
they can all take full liberty with. They’re all hard to categorize because
they really don’t fit with the cliché’s of the genres they’re thrown into.
The Greencards are actually a bluegrass band but you would never guess it
listening to or looking at them. They’re from Europe and Australia and they
look like kind of artsy, indie people and their music is kind of like that
too. They use the usual bluegrass instruments: guitar, banjo, mandolin, ect.
But in different ways. Definitely check them out if you haven’t!

Another musical hero of mine is Lyle Lovett. He is a true lyricist. His
songs tell stories. He’s a great example of good old Texas country music.
Sometimes he makes me really homesick!

5. What are your ambitions? Is music just a hobby or you really pursuing it
with everything you got?

Music is something I always want to have with me. I would really like to see
my musical career take off but if it doesn’t, I plan on going to college.
I’m not sure what I’ll major in but I’ve got some ideas! It’s a toss right
now between going into the film industry as a Music Director (as in the
person who picks the music, not who necessarily writes it), Music Therapy,
or Psychology.

6. What is your musical background? Are you self-taught or did you take
lessons?

Again, I’ve grown up surrounded my music. I learn a lot on my own but
sometimes I have to ask my grandmother or my dad for help. And of course,
they’re always right there to teach me!

7. What are your thoughts about people that perform singing to CD’s that
still have the main vocals on it. Do you think that takes away from their
performance? I mean, do you think it hides their voice too much?

I think it’s pretty lame. You can’t hear their voice. When you’re in your
car singing with the radio, it’s cool. But if you’re gonna sing karaoke or
with a CD, go to a karaoke night, not an open mic night. I feel like the
real musicians who get up there after someone singing with a track have to
work hard to gain the audience’s attention back. I have definitely
experienced that. After hearing Hannah Montana or whatever, they don’t care
what’s going on onstage.

8. What do you think of professional performers like Britney Spears and others like her that lip-sync to pre-recorded vocal tracks during their concerts and not sing? Do you think it cheats the audience?

I think in some situations it does. In televised outdoor concerts, i.e. the Macy’s Day Parade, it’s really a must to prevent major botches. But in a concert setting it’s not acceptable. If you mess up, it’s obvious that you’re lip-syncing and it makes you look really bad.

9. If you could go out on tour with anyone, who would it be and why?

Oh gosh! That’s a tough question! I would say either Sheryl Crow or The Greencards. Just because they’re my favorites!

10. # 10 is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead Katie, and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Well there’s a really exciting event that I’ll be a part of coming up pretty soon in Henderson County. It’s called “Terror on the Trail.” It’s a haunted trail out in the Robards/Niagara area that is a charity event. It’ll be October 23rd and 24th. On the 24th we will be participating in “Thrill the World.” “Thrill the World” is a global tribute to Michael Jackson in which groups all around the world will simultaneously do the Thriller dance! Every participants name will be in the Guinness World Records book. (If we break the record!)

Bonus Question

Your dad is in the music business too and you guys perform together. Has he you warned you about all the pitfalls in this crazy business and do you ever refer to him as “Robert Stewart” or “Billy Ray Cyrus”? 😛

Hahaha I don’t call him either of those names but he has warned me about the risks of not being that one in a million. I also act and I’ve experienced not getting the role I wanted or a role at all and I know that music will be pretty much the same. But I have confidence in myself and I try not to stress over it too much! 🙂

GHOST STORY # 1…No Boo’s but Alien Encounters with Chaz

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

ANIalienHead03C

E.T. NO BOO!
Written by Chaz

MyFirstEncounter2A good ghost story? Not really.  Hey! It’s the season for ghouls! Unfortunately, I have no ghost stories to tell.  So what’s the next best thing, besides knowing a guy that had a friend, who knew a girl that was married to a guy, that after losing his job at the chicken farm, went nuts and killed all of his coworkers?  And to this day, still haunts the dreams of our children who love McNuggets?

ALIENS!

Big heads, bigs eyes, a somewhat irregular oval-like head…
And they never talk.  The use telepathy, right?

Maybe they GPS your ass and check-in from time to time to see if you have been helping advance or degenerate the human race.  Kind of like the government…that’s a joke.  Maybe?

OK.  For you, my friends.  I offer a very small collection of stories, all involving aliens or something related to our friends from unknown worlds.  I make no claims concerning the authenticities, nor do I claim that what I saw was really that of unknown worlds.  The following stories all are factual, according to my eyes…and in some cases, according to a child’s mind that has yet to be exposed to the idea of aliens.  That makes it intriguing, yes?  OK. Maybe not! Which brings me to my next claim, or not to claim…and that would be your own interpretations.  I know what I saw those nights.  I know what I dreamed and I know I love my late grandmother.  So enjoy! And be sure to watch the sky…or your bedroom window.

My First Encounter

MyFirstEncounterI have vivid memories of certain parts of my childhood.  On this particular evening, my family had piled into the living room to watch TV.  I’m sure it was the A-Team or something along those lines.  My mother had her chair. My father had his.  My brother and I were usually wrestling or lying on the floor.  It was dark outside and at this time I was doing a favorite pass time of mine.  Wearing my fathers tube socks and sliding across the hardwood den floor on my knees.

I can’t remember how many times I did this…
I can’t remember if anything was different this night…
I can’t remember if it was a dream or if it was real…

I do remember sliding across the floor, towards the windows on the south side of the house.
I looked up to see this “thing.” I say “thing” because I had yet been exposed to anything alien-like.

I was around 6 years of age and I don’t even think I had seen a horror movie yet.
It was close to that age and it was A Nightmare on Elm Street, thanks to my older cousins, but I digress.

I looked up and this “thing” was at least seven feet tall.  It had a dark golden hue to it.
It’s head was round, but pulled upwards and out a bit.  It also had some sort of tiny antennae.

Scared the hell out of me!
Looking back now, it kind of reminds me of C3-PO from Star Wars, but on steroids.

Let’s Race!My mother and I were driving home late one night after visiting my aunt and the cousins.

 LetsRace

I was in the back seat looking at the stars.
I noticed this one star that seemed to be following us.

I can’t remember if it had a color.  There was no trail behind it, but it did seem to be a tad larger than the other stars.  It had been  following us for nearly 4 miles of our 9-mile trip and then it changed course and flew like a meteor across the sky.  It had a solid tail of light behind it, not broken or dust like.

That’s it…were you expecting more?

Read on.
The next two stories, are in my eyes, the best, most detailed and to this day…unexplainable.

Fill’er Up!

FillerUpGrandma was always having some sort of trouble with her in-laws.

The in-laws wanted the farm.  And on occasion, the county police would have to get involved.  On a nice cool Fall evening my grandmother noticed a bright blue light in her drive way.  She instantly thought the in-laws were causing more trouble.

She made her way to the driveway.  The blue light started to rise.
My grandmother had a dusk to dawn light at the end of her drive way.

It probably reached 30 feet into the air.  As she walked closer, this blue object rose higher.
Once it got to the top of the dusk to dawn light, it grew larger and disappeared.  All of her electricity shut off, like there was a surge.

After 15 minutes or so, her electricity came back.

She told us grandchildren that “they” had to refuel.
And for years, she swore that she was visited by aliens who were just looking to refuel.

Fast forward a couple years…a light in the field, moving side to side!
My grandmother calls us and we come to check on it, my father with .44 in hand.

Turned out to a balloon caught in cut corn stalks.
Lucky it wasn’t an alien!  Dad would of went Dirty Harry on him.

Outside My Window

 OutsideMyWindow

And the last story!  I know you’re shaking with anticipation. I’ll make this one quick and simple.

This story actually starts around the time I was eight years of age and wraps up around 2002.

I woke in the middle of the night, looked outside my bedroom windows to see three purple triangles.
They were quite large in size.  They seemed to be floating in the air.  I went back to bed and thought nothing of it.

I knew nothing about aliens, unless Stars Wars qualifies.

Fast forward to 2002.

I was working in radio and I had to be at the studio by 4:30am.
I was living in Illinois at the time, which meant that I had to get up for work around 2:45am.

I was listening to Coast to Coast AM during the drive to Evansville.
They were discussing various types of spacecraft.

Then I heard it. Purple Triangles! Really?  Seems like other people have seen the same as I.
So finally, after 20 years or so, I had learned the truth about what I had seen that night.

Scared?
Maybe I have microchip in my ass.
Maybe there is some truth?

Don’t underestimate the power of the mind, nor the gateways of our souls…the eyes.
Sometimes, what you see if what you get and what you might have been trying to understand has always been in front of you.

Ghost stories? None…although I have done my share of going to graveyards and sites of legendary accidents. What else does a high schooler in Midwest America have to do for a scare on Halloween?

I do remember an old ran down house that was used for Satanic Rituals…a good scare none-the-less.
But no ghost. Pure evil? Maybe.  Aliens?  You just missed them, but they saw you.

Opinion Page:”GRIPS” Reports in on Double Dukes

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Disclaimer

(Guest submissions may or may not reflect the opinions of the owners and staff at KICKACTS)

GRIPS

GRIPS?

Went into Double Dukes last night for the first time on a Saturday night in 6 – 8 months—–WHAT A LET DOWN!!!.  One bartender, one security gaurd, and one person taking up the $5 cover charge (probably didn’t take in enough all night to pay her wages——most people were there before 8PM when they start charging to get in).  No waitresses!!!  There was a wedding reception going on in “The Ramada Inn” and I overheard the bartender say that she hoped some of the people from the reception would come into the bar because she could sure use the tips.  The Relics was the band—–if anyone came in from the wedding reception and paid the $5 cover charge—–they would be relics%3cO%3c%3cO%3c.  About 10:15 I got to realizing that there wouldn’t be any single, good-looking women coming into the place, because ain’t any good-looking women going to pay $5 to get into a club—–if any came in, they would be with a guy who would be paying her cover.  Everybody knows, if you can get single women coming into a bar—–guys are going to follow.

What a come down for one of the premier clubs in the tri-state in the 90’s and early 21st century.  I remember going in there on a Saturday night and Double Dukes (Charlie’s Place) would have 3 bars open (remember the one under the stairs), four bartenders, 5-6 waitresses, 3-4 security gaurds, and 2 door whores.  The manager would be hovering around keeping an eye on everything.  Hell, they even had a waitress at the door with a cooler of beer meeting you as you came in!!!  Good looking waitresses!!!  Good looking bartenders!!!

I realize Danny and his crew are trying their best, but they’re trying to overcome 4-5 years of poor
operations by prior management.  Thanks a lot Tammy%3cngry.  I mean, he’s trying—-big screens, specials—–but that poor, prior management is hard to overcome.  And it looks like all that business that was coming up from Madisonville on Friday and Saturday nights has dried up.  I look for Danny to close the place again after his lease is up and concentrate exclusively on “Bullys” and his other business interests.

By the way, saw on the Henderson County Court Docket that the Dukes (Audubon Loans) are taking Fred Yi (the current owner/operator of The Ramada) to court for not honoring the terms of his agreement with the Dukes.  Look for the Dukes, however reluctantly, to have to take over the operations of The Ramada again.  Don’t know how that would affect Double Dukes, but I will say this, the Dukes ran Double Dukes well when they had it——good looking, friendly bartenders and waitresses, efficent staff, something always going on.
