” Dressed to Kill” The Very Entertaining Hostess “Cassidy Fellows-Sommers”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

cass-21. Hello Cassidy and welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks Kickacts! I’d like to start off by saying “Thank You” for selecting me to interview. I am really honored that you’re interested in my life and my work. My given name is Jeremy Turner, but many of my friends call me “Cass”. I live everyday as a man, but on the weekends I transform into Cassidy Fellows-Sommers. During the week, I am an HIV Prevention Specialist for a HIV specialty clinic  and contract with AIDS Resource Group of Evansville to execute a CDC HIV intervention in Evansville, IN. When I am not busy with work or drag, I enjoy playing the piano, watching movies, hanging out with friends Etc.

2. Being a cross dresser and gay is obviously an “alternative lifestyle” by some of society’s standards. Does your family know about it and if so, do they approve/ disapprove and how important is that to you?

The art of female impersonation is definitely something you’d think twice about before consulting grandma on which pair of heels matches your dance costume. I was not blessed with a progressive family, so the “coming out” process has definitely been a challenge over the years. At this point, everyone who I am going to tell in my family already knows (and that would be everyone BUT my grandparents and an uncle.) My mother and cousins know about my drag performances, but without being a part of the gay community or having a good understanding of the purpose drag serves in gay nightlife, it is difficult to discuss in detail with them. My mother prefers the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on the issue.

Regarding the issues importance, their opinions hold little bearing on how I run my life. I had a rough patch with my family when I “came out” and was separated from them for a short time. Since then, I have learned to be very self sufficient and their opinions don’t hold the clout they used to.

3. Why all the fuss over Judy Garland, Cher, and Liza? They seem to be the poster children for the gay movement. Why is that?

When I read this question, I immediately compared it to other questions like “Why is the sky blue?” or “How have bumble bees managed to fly?” LOL I can’t put my finger on just one identifier that causes some performers (Cher, Judy, Liza, Bette, Barbara Etc.) to become gay icons, but I do have some ideas.

I think the most likely reason these entertainers are so highly treasured by the gay community is that many of them sympathized with gays and lesbians before it was the “in” thing to do. These ladies are now either dead, or well into their sixties. It was more of a statement for someone to publicly support gays and lesbians when they were young and at the peak of their popularity. We as gay people are not quick to forget that.

I also think that gay people can identify with someone who has a past. Many gay icons have a history of substance abuse, domestic violence, suicide attempts and other personal tragedies, and those are the very same issues that plague our culture at higher rates than the heterosexual communities.

Also, the personalities of these women are very over-the-top and easy to impersonate in drag. (Which may ultimately be the biggest contributor to their gay following LOL)

4. Do you perform regularly in Drag? If so, where can we see you performing at?cass-3

I do perform weekly as I am able. I have been doing drag since November 2003 at Someplace Else Bar and Nightclub @ 930 Main St. Evansville, IN 47708. In the past I have traveled to bars and nightclubs around the region and out west, however my schedule does not really accommodate that as well as it used to. I began as a comedy performer and doing Cass Elliot impersonation. As the years have passed my drag has changed into what I have become now. I perform a combination of classic drag numbers and hits from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s primarily. All the local performers have at least some sort of “niche” they find and we are all quite different. I am known as “Evansville’s Glamazon Goddess” because of my stature (6’9 in heels and well over 300lbs,) my deep voice, and my quick wit on the mic. Being the show hostess is definitely my forte.

5. You work for the AIDS Resource Group of Evansville. Tell us about that and the work you do.

Indeed I do! I actually work for two agencies, and ARG of Evansville is one of them. In 2004 I accepted a position with AIDS Resource Group of Evansville serving as the Youth Education Initiative Program Coordinator. In this position, I was charged with bringing HIV/STD prevention education to youth in the southern eleven counties of Indiana one classroom at a time. Until December of last year I was dedicated to that project solely. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts and changes in state funding options; my program funding was not renewed by the state department of health.

Fortunately, there is an HIV specialty clinic based in Henderson, KY (right across a bridge from Evansville) that was seeking someone to perform in a very similar capacity. I was offered employment with them and started with the HIV specialty clinic on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2008.

I enjoy every day that I am able to come to work and make a difference in someone’s life. 50% of sexually active high school students will statistically contract an STD. I do my best to keep that number as low as possible. I still do work for ARG as well, so I am keeping very busy.jeremy

6. What do you think of Perez Hilton and do you think he is “the spokesman” for the gay community?

I think that Perez is awfully entertaining, but I personally don’t consider him the spokesman for our community. I believe that he is viewed that way by the general public though. I chalk that up to the fact that he represents just about every gay stereotype out there.

I just saw MILK (highly suggested btw) for the first time this weekend and was commenting on the fact we had no real spokesperson. If I had to pick, it would definitely be Ellen hands down. In my opinion, Perez’s website is the gay equivalent of the National Enquirer, more than slightly ridiculous.

7. Do you think his recent “rant” in the media helped out or hurt the gay community?

Most definitely hurt. I think he can become downright militant at times, and that does not fit into my ideology for responding to people who disagree with me or my lifestyle.

8. How do you feel about Miss California’s answer to his question?

I’d like to begin by saying that it saddens me to know so many people across the county feel the very same way that she does. I am not sure why we are dealing with the same issues I saw being tackled by our community in MILK which took place in the 70’s. In 30 years time, we are still not equal, and many Americans not only are ok with it, they adamantly support the discrimination of gays and lesbians.

However, that being said, I support her courage to stand up for what she believes in. In the same way I believe gays should legally be afforded the same rights and privileges as every other person in the country, she is allowed to not only believe differently, but vocalize her beliefs without receiving the kind of backlash she did from Perez and the press. This is America and we not only believe that “all men are created equal” but that every individual has a right to “freedom of speech” and “freedom of religion.”

9. How long does it take you to get “into” character? And do high heels hurt your feet too?cass-1

It is a process. Without actually DOING drag, it is impossible to realize everything that goes into it. The whole package takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. It’s very intensive, beginning with gluing eyebrows down, applying huge quantities of thick foundation and cotey powder, drawing on exaggerated eyes and vibrant eye make-up, fake eyelashes, cheek contouring, four different types of girdles, duct tape, tights, foam hip and butt pads and 3-5 pairs of pantyhose.

Regarding the shoes and foot pain, I said earlier that I am a big guy and if I have learned one thing over the years it is that the human body is not meant to walk in heels, especially not mine. My heels are generally 3-4 inches high and it is damn near crippling to wear them all night. (I wear a women’s size 15 or 16 depending, in case you were wondering.)

10. Just curious. Why do gay men who do not enjoy the sexual company of women dress like them then?

I cannot answer this question for everyone. There are many reasons people do drag. For me, I enjoy entertaining people and drag is completely non-sexual. For others, they may identify as transgendered and drag is an outlet for them to feel like a lady. Personally, I very much enjoy being a man, and have never been inclined to seek gender reassignment.

Drag plays a HUGE role in the gay nightlife across the country, in some places more than others. Evansville is a medium sized community and there are few places for gays and lesbians to go where they are comfortable being openly coupled in public. Gay bars are a meeting place for a lot of people and if you’re not much on crowded dance floors, its more than likely you’ll spend most of your evening watching the drag shows.

I suggest you seek out a drag show on a Saturday night and find out for yourself what actually happens. There are many straight people who come regularly to be entertained by drag queens and to take advantage of the lower drink prices at gay bars. (I find our drinks quite reasonably priced.)

Bonus question and its a toughie.

Why is it that the general gay community cannot just accept the fact that some people will never approve of their life style so when the straight community voices that, the gay community tends to show hostility. For example, Perez Hilton remarking that Miss California was a “stupid bitch” for her stating her beliefs since they didn’t line up with what he wanted her to say? Would you address that?

(I am basing this response with the idea that Miss California made her comments out of religious conviction. Otherwise, I am less tolerant of those who object to my lifestyle out of prejudice and ignorance.)

This is a tough question, and I have given it a great deal of thought. As I said earlier, Perez’s response was unwarranted and embarrassing.

In the conflict, you have two groups of people dealing in abstracts. The belief and faith in understanding of God’s will and scripture on one end, and on the other the idea that one man/woman can share a love between a partner of the same sex that is just as passionate as those who are married in the heterosexual community, and that this lifestyle is not a choice.

If God could descend from heaven and smite every gay and lesbian couple living in sin, it would be a very clear sign that, in fact, there was a God. The same God that dictated the gospels be recorded and that God was extremely upset and disgusted with the deviant behaviors of mankind. Unfortunately, that is not likely to happen, so it leaves an ideology that people believe in by faith alone.

Adversely, I believe homosexuality is not a choice. I have been attracted to the same sex since I was a child. I suffered no sexual abuse and had quite a regular childhood. I believe that I was born this way and wonder why people think we would choose a lifestyle that is looked down upon by such a large portion of society. I believe gays should be allowed to marry and that a love shared between the same sex is just as real and the union just as blessed as any other marriage. However, my belief is just as abstract as those who support the condemnation of gays in scripture. If scientists could identify the reason, without a doubt, that people are attracted to the same sex, and if the reason was indeed natural and no force could change that attraction, my views would be authenticated. That is unlikely to happen, and if it did, I doubt it would have much impact on society.

After all of this typing, I return to the idea of beliefs in the abstract. Who would win in a fight between Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? Who knows, but I can tell you that I have faith in America and I believe that ultimately, someday, the people will move past the discrimination of gays and lesbians. Someday we will have a solid place in American culture where were can be free to love openly and share all of our wonderful gifts without discrimination.

We always give everyone a chance to say what ever they feel. The Sky is the limit!! So go ahead Cassidy, and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!!jeremy-1

Know your status. HIV is a disease that has touched many members of communities both big and small. Know that HIV is not a gay disease-it affects and infects those from all walks of life. The only way to know your status is to get tested. Have fun and play safe!

Cassidy

Court Alton from “Big Slick”

bigslick_4c_entllc-condensed1

bs1. Welcome to Kick Acts, Court. Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m married to an awesome gal and have a pretty good kid who’s getting ready to turn 14 soon.  I work in finance industry during the day; have the last 10+ years. I’m 34 and have been playing music in the tri-state for over 15 years professionally.

2. You’re currently singing in a band called Big Slick. Tell us who’s in the band and how we can find you on-line and any shows that we can watch you.

bsa

The front of the Big Slick band are me and Brittany Bayley. The point of difference for this band is that the band members are selected before each show based upon the needs of the client. If the performance needs to be more blues & funk or rock & roll, the most appropriate musician is contracted specifically for that show. Because the pool of talent are all seasoned musicians and usually have worked with one another at some point in their career, they can jump in quickly and meld a great sound. The clients need drives the band, so the show is custom to each event.

Almost everything we have booked this year are private events with the exception of September 11th & 12th we’ll be playing a public show at Hoosiers Lounge in Casino Aztar.

On Line: www.bookbigslick.com
Email: bookbigslick@yahoo.com, courtalton@yahoo.com
Cell: 812-453-6795

3. You guys are more of a professional lounge band or corporate act then the standard “bar band” we usually see around here. What sets you apart from those type of bands?

The musicians do not have a long term commitment to a static band, they get to jam with a variety of other musicians, it stays fresh, and the overall attitude is professional and positive. And even better, this system works for the client as well because they get a customized show for their special event.

Many clients are repeat customers because they are able to provide input, such as song requests and have pre-planning meetings to discuss timelines and details. They become a part of the process which makes them feel valued. Sometimes, the full Big Slick band is too large for an event, in which case, Big Slick Entertainment, LLC musical entertainment booking agency will step in and find the appropriate performers such as soloists, acoustic acts, just piano, and anything else that the client needs.

4. How long have you been a musician? Tell us about some of your experiences.

I’ve been playing for almost 20 years. It’s been a lot of fun and I have had the opportunity to play with some very talented musicians ovecc-thomas-wedding-microphone-in-crowder the years. Some of the area bands I have been a member include, Severed Ties, Tom Slick, Stompbox 40, Hoosier Daddy, and currently Big Slick.

5. Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Since the concept of Big Slick came to life 4 years ago, every gig has been great! I have got to meet few national acts over the years too which was very cool!

6. How about the worst gig?

Tried to play through the flu once and had to call a friend in after the first set..that was quiet some time ago.

7. Do you have any other hobbies other than singing in the band?

I’m a Kentucky boy (transplant) so I hunt and fish quiet a bit. My son is at that age where I love involving him in these activities as well. I’m also a fan of NASCAR and try to go to a couple races every year, (that’s why this was late…I was in Talladega, Alabama when Kick Acts asked for the interview…thanks for being patient Chuck!) I’m also currently looking into clubs, events, and drives with fellow Corvette owners and enthusiasts.

8. Who are your musical heroes, and influences & why?

“Joe Cocker & Johnny Cash because they are awesome and we have very similar singing styles to my own”. Freddy King, Sam Cooke, James Brown, BB King – are all masters of R&B and blues, they are all simply amazing. (I really enjoy lots of funk and blues acts) Eddie Vedder for stage presence.

9. Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Stay positive and keep a good reputation for being a true professional. The gigs aren’t going to fall into your lap, you have to market yourself and be ready to back up what you promise when you make that booking. Don’t be afraid to contact some of us that have been doing this for a while for some friendly advice…

10. # 10 is called “Shout it Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead Court, and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Shout it out loud, here goes.  I’d like to say thank you to some of the people who have helped make Big Slick a success over the years either in their continued support, friendship, and or musicianship:

Kathleen Alton
Brittany Bayley
Katie Proctor
Kris Proctor
Saundra Hadley
Matt Osborne
Rod Bennett
Matt Clark
Erick Scales
Glen Gore
Mike McKenney
Greg Minnette
Bob Green
Allen Van Hoosier
Darci Roberts
Mike Niles
Adam Siemers
Nick Hamilton

All you guys are great!  Also a big thank you goes out to all past and return clients for allowing us to bring joy into your event!

Bonus question: “The most entertaining gig you ever played”

I was playing in Jasper when two wedding parties — one Burgundy and the other Teal — came into the venue. The two different brides and their bridesmaids started dancing and having a great time! As the night progressed, they started doing shots together and the next thing you know, the brides are kissing each other at the bar. The grooms have different reactions…one groom is egging them on and the second groom gets mad and pushes one bride away from the other. Immediately, groom #1 sees this happen and pushes groom #2 to the ground and then it’s a mealy of burgundy against teal, groom against groom, and bride against bride. The place was a mess and there were many wardrobe malfunctions if you know what I mean…Quickly, the police arrived and we were asked to go on break. When we returned from break, the visual we encountered was priceless…the two brides are handcuffed sitting on a curb crying, with members of each wedding party sitting in police cars…one heck of a way to spend your wedding night…huh?

Singer Meth ArrestWe need to get Meth off the streets. This is a very bad drug and destroys lives and families. It’s an epidemic. I say all meth dealers should be put to death and not in 20+ years of serving time. You deal meth, maybe 1 warning, after that, game over…

Here’s the article about Henry Lee Summers getting arrested with it…

Ten Questions With Sherrie – Queen Of Hearts

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

1. What inspired you to get into tattooing?

My ex was a piercer at a local shop that is no longer in business. I watched the owner tattoo for around three weeks and asked her if I could try doing a tattoo. She said that it was fine. I did three practice tats and she told me to start charging. She said she had never seen anyone pick up tattooing in such a short amount of time.

2. Is there still a stigma associated with people getting tattoos?

Absolutely! A lot of people think that people with tats are nothing but trouble makers and are on dope. I do not do drugs at all. I am totally against it. I had to watch certain people in my family go down hill or die from using drugs. But yes, there is still a “taboo” about people with tattoos.

3. What kind of formal training do you have? Do have have to be licensed or can anyone do it?

Yes you have to be licensed. You must be in a shop in order to get your license. A lot of people think they can come in and get their license and then quit the shop. Once you quit the shop you are no longer considered licensed. They want to do tats at home to get the full amount of money, but they do not realize that in a lot of areas you can go to jail for that.

4. How safe are tattoo parlors today? Do they have to adhere to strict health guidelines? What should a first timer look for?

Most tattoo parlors are safe, but then again you do have your slacker studios that cut corners to save money. I have received 100% on all my health inspections except one, and that was a 99%. A first time customer should ask to see the sterilized tubes and needles. If they are not in a packaging do not get a tat there. There are indicators on the sterilization pouches that let you know if the equipment has been sterilized correctly. You can also contact your local health department to see what studios may have had reports of staph or any other infections.

5. What’s the strangest flash you’ve ever tattooed on someone?

Not really the flash but the location itself was strange. I tattooed butterfly wings on a female’s labia. That was quite an experience in itself. I would have much rather gone fishing or to the mall rather than earn that money. LOL!!!

6. Have you ever try to talk someone out of a particular tattoo? If so, why?

I always try to talk people out of getting their boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s, husband’s/wife’s names tatted on them. I have done this and in most circumstances they split up. In the tat business we consider that a jinx.

7. Do you do piercings too?

Yes, I do piercings. I actually won a trophy at the Greater Kentucky Expo in 2007 for the most unusual male piercing. I placed 50 rings (surface piercings) in a young man’s stinger.

8. For anyone wanting to get new ink or maybe a piercing, where is your tattoo parlor located?

My studio is located at 1205D South Green Street in Henderson, Kentucky.

9. Do the guys at Kick Acts get free ink for the plug? ;^)

Absolutely! Why not, scratch my back and I scratch yours, not to rough though, I’m delicate lol.

10. OK Sherrie, it’s time for you to answer the question(s) we forgot to ask. What’s on your mind? Shout it out loud!

I love giving people something beautiful that they can take with them when they leave this plateau we call life. It is one thing that friends and family can’t fight or argue on who gets it BECAUSE IT IS YOURS TO KEEP. A lot of people say that I am desecrating my temple (your body is a temple) all I have to say is God gave me this body. I am decorating my temple.

Bonus: Have you ever tattooed a dude’s stinger? If so, does it have to be hard. If it does, how can it stay hard when you are stabbing it with a tattoo gun?

In fact I have tattooed a mans stinger. LOL! He wanted a scorpion put on his junk. start from his pee hole up to his abdomen. When I asked why he wanted this particular tattoo, his reply was ” This way when I get a hard on it looks like I’m coming to sting her.” I just about fell out considering the gentleman was in his early sixties. YOU GO BOY!! Hope most of you guys can still perform when you get up there!!!

Getting Naked With Trish Knight – Track 2

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

As you all know, right before we published our interview with Trish, she was relieved from her duties at WABX. We did a petition (which will remain open) and sent it to the WABX management. We also thought it would be cool to follow up with her and see how things are going.

1) WABX’s Facebook page states that they are still rocking in the bad economy yet you lost your job due to the economy, how has that affected you and your family?

We are fantastic…we live on love. Before, one great gig barely kept this family of 3 afloat, now it’s piles of paper work for government assistance of every kind. It’s funny how a salary that can’t even support a family of 3 can help any company financially.

2) Since we last talked, you’ve had some new doors open, can you fill us in?

Before I could even think about grieving over not being at that job I loved so much, Sandman e-mailed me and the discussions began.

3) If you are back on the radio, where can your friends and fans find you?

That job I never thought I’d have and love…103GBF. I’m on the air Saturdays, 2-7pm and every now and then I will be live on location. Check out the calendar at 103gbfrocks.com. Mike Sanders. THANK YOU, MAN!! He not only offered me a gig, but actually shows appreciation for the work one does. That’s so new to me.

4) Have you received any feedback from WABX from the petition we sent to them?

None. But I’m sure they have more important things to do with their time.

5) On a lighter note, what song(s) do you actually hate to play and if you never played again, the world world be a happier place? (We couldn’t get other DJ’s to answer this one…)

I don’t know why other DJ’s wouldn’t answer. I guess it depends on which world they DJ for. As far as MY world, there is A song but it’s attached to a situation that still upsets me a bit…I was playing Tom Petty’s “Saving Grace” (requested during a request lunchtime hour) when my PD at the time called, while on vacation, while I was playing the song, to ask that I never play it again. As I started to ask how the vacation was going, the boss hung up on me without a good-bye or a thank you for even answering during a pretty busy request hour.

6) Has anyone besides Lee Ramirez ever called you a MILF?

A what? I always forget what than stands for. In today’s world, it’s considered a compliment, right? (Editor’s note: YES!)

7) Your husband recently had back surgery. We really care about our friends families too so how is he doing?

Lots of pain…different pain, different day. For the most part it’s too soon to really know. Neuro Dr/Surgeon says that it could be a year or more before any changes, if at all.

8) This question is not really a question, it’s called THE LAST WORD. We want you to say what you want to say about this whole ordeal and get in THE LAST WORD. 🙂

Dedication, acceptance, compliance, passion for what you do…they mean nothing to some families. Without such attributes, how happy is a family, anyway? It’s a damn good thing, a grace from God, that I have an incredible family now. 3-4 years ago in the same situation, I would have been devastated having my heart and soul taken in less than 5 minutes without a single word of appreciation or a thank you. That is exactly how I felt about the gig too…my heart and soul. I quit school to be there for a “family” more than a decade ago. I continued to dedicate myself and loved what I was doing. I guess, after all that time (more than 16 years), it didn’t even matter. That is how it feels and thinking about it fills me with overwhelming sadness. Thanks to MY family, those moments don’t last long.

As for the family I haven’t mentioned, including kickacts.com’s Allen and Chuck. The ones pressing the buttons and staying there with me. I can not thank you enough for the wonderful thoughts, the petition signing, the warm reception at 103GBF, the well-wishes!!! If it wasn’t for you, I don’t think I could have loved that job as much as I did. You helped me love it and survive the negative things that were going on around me the last few years. For that, I will be forever grateful!!!

God Bless YOU and Rock ON!!!!

A Category #5 hurricane hits MEXICO.

Two million Mexicans died and over a million are injured.

The country is totally ruined and the government doesn’t know where to start and is asking for help to rebuild.

The rest of the world is in shock.

CANADA is sending troops to help the Mexican army control the riots.

SAUDI ARABIA is sending oil.

Other LATIN AMERICAN countries are sending supplies.

The EUROPEAN community (except FRANCE) is sending food and money.

The UNITED STATES, not to be outdone, is sending two million Mexicans to replace the dead ones.

GOD BLESS AMERICA !!!
