The Maiden Post

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

If you are reading this with anticipation of shocking breaking news about Iron Maiden, sorry to disappoint. This is my first post for Kick Acts Magazine, in fact, my first posted blog ever.

Chuck mentioned writing for Kick Acts to me, and it seemed completely foreign to consider. However, he had caught me in a moment of weakness (in the middle of a rushed show set up and sound check) and I stumbled and said sure!

I suppose we should cover the formality of me introducing myself in this first post. I am a 42 year old family man. Married to my wife for 20 years with 11 and 14 year old boys. Born and reared in Western Kentucky. Moved around a bit from 1993 to 2005, all work related. Settled back down in the Henderson area in 2005 and here ever since. Background in Sales Management, Operations Management, Live Audio, and Stage Lighting. Toured extensively from 1996 to 2001 as a Lighting Director and Production Manager coming off the road before our second child was born. Currently in an Operations Management role for a successful locally owned business as well as a Weekend Road Warrior in the role of Audio and Lighting Engineer for a regional cover band.

I will write based on my observations of the Tri State music scene, from the angle of the band and crew. Not going to be reviewing bands or critiquing clubs, not my thing. It will be me sharing funny, interesting, and if we are lucky, an occassional informative story of my experience from either working a show or seeing one. Intend on posting on Monday’s, we will see how that goes.

Until next week…

The Sauce

She covers the guitar parts, vocal parts and nails the solos too. Why do I even try to play?…

KickActs interviews “Pullman Standard”!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the artist!

Pullman Standard

pullman standard picture

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

Austin:  The First Pullman Standard show as a full band was in 2008, We have since played over 500 shows and self-released 2 E.P.’s and a full – length album.  find our music everywhere but maybe start at our website www.PullmanStandard.com

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Band: There is no one band that we look at and say thats who we want to sound like.  We listen to everything, The Police, The Cure , Deftones , Jimmy Eat World , Anberlin , Explosions in the Sky , Smashing Pumpkins, Bruno Mars, Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, No Doubt, Kings of Leon , Thrice, Neon Trees , The Killers , Queen … I love Pop it is a definate guilty pleasure … Pink , LMFAO , Kelly Clarkson , One Republic, Jason Derulo , Cher lloyde, Kesha

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Timmy: Stay focused , remember that this is something that you should love to do…. Nothing is achieved without hard work and tenacity.  So work hard!

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Timmy:  We got to perform for the great Don Was , look him up, he is a cool guy.

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

Timmy: I think the only thing that can really make a gig crappy is a bad promoter.  We have played in some pretty bad weather conditions and pretty unorthidox venues but we always make the best of the shows.

Austin : We performed at the Dallas TX Rock n Roll marathon in Mid march and it was 22 degrees on the stage and it was super windy… I couldnt feel my fingers as i tried to get through each song.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

Timmy:  All my friends use to make fun of me , but i like building miniature stuff… Model Trains, Model Cars, RC planes… But i love vintage Cars, would love to rebuild something from the 1950’s

Austin: Im a big fan of Vintage and Foreign films , Random Novels

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

Although three out of four of us are from San Diego we are based out of Los Angeles… North Hollywood to be exact.  The scene here is over saturated to say the least and its hard to ever get any body out to a local show because most of the smaller venues have been taken over by pay to play promoters that dont really care about the scene and make you sell a whole bunch of tickets for a thirty minute time slot. But i guess thats one of the beauties about touring.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Timmy:  I am an avid motorcycle enthusiast

Austin:  I am into geology and cartography and land study

Gilly: I am a big big fan of the spiderman comic series

Core:  I have a dog named Charlie its a german shepherd

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

Timmy:  Mary Ann, so cute…I guess i have a thing for simple er low maintenance girls

Austin:  Ginger?

Gilly: Mrs Howell… Cougar

Core: Did i mention I have a dog named Charlie and its a German shepherd???lol

Our last question is called “Shout it out Loud”. It’s were you get to say anything you would like to say, so go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD!”

We are doing a lot of touring this year … Please come out and support us if you see that we are in your town… And on that note, support your local music scene.

Tales from the “Choping Block” Deathisode 2 Bubbles and Pee-Eye

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Incredible artist by night. Locked away lonely butcher by day. He sees life from the other side of the glass. His “Tales from the Chop” are real. His outlook is slightly twisted. A part time Bouncer amongst the rows of dry goods when he is not cutting up the day’s morsels. His humor moves at the brush stroke of madness..He is for all practical purposes, a poetic Sweeney John. Hack on!

Deathisode 2.

aaedganOkay…So, today at work a fight broke out between two female gutter rats (Let’s call them Bubbles and Pee-Eye).
Coming in on the middle of it, I could only assume that it was over who was the better Bingo player.
When I arrived on the scene, Bubbles was armed and ready to throw a can of vegetables (Creamed corn, actually) and poor Pee-Eye only with a purse that was obviously purchased from the 1970’s oversized handbag section of the local trash mart.
The manager and I stepped in between them and amidst the threats and swearing we were able to learn what happened…
The two ladies had been coming down the same aisle from opposite ends and each spotted a discarded scratch off lottery ticket.
Both claimed ownership and the fight began.
The manager took the ticket, examined it and informed them that it was not a winner.
This made no difference to the mouthy, mobile dung heaps, as they continued to go bitchcakes on each other.
The manager told them both to leave the store or he would call the police.
Bubbles screamed, “Call the Law! I’ll put them down, too!”
The manager pulled his phone and the women went silent.
He told them to go off in different directions and to exit the store.
As they were departing, Bubbles made one last statement….”Keep that bitch away from me or I’m gonna kick her in the fish bucket!”
Yep…Fish Bucket.

Okay…So, today at work this Swamp Ape (A southern term for Bigfoot) came lumbering through, complete with offspring.
The piece of trash, sporting long blonde hair that looked as if it were washed in mayonnaise, was busy on her phone and was not paying attention to Chaka.
The kid started puncturing a package of ground beef with his fingers and licking them.
This happens more often than you might think….
Neglectful, trashy inbreds letting their kids tear up everything in sight and act completely oblivious to the situation.
Well…Not on my watch.
First, I stepped in and told the kid to stop, picked up the damaged package and presented to Mrs. Yeti and explained what had happened.
She looked at me and said, “Well, I didn’t see him do it and I ain’t payin’ for it.”
I returned fire by saying, “No worries. It’s not as if we would make any money off of your welfare card, anyway.”
We continued to exchange barbs and realizing she was dealing with a higher primate went off in a huff, child following behind, mumbling some crazy moon language that I couldn’t understand.
Before making a complete exit, I was able to take a few fingers of ground beef from the damaged package and drop it inside the hood of her coat.
I was hoping that it might not be found, rot and stink up their house…
Then I realized, by the look of them, that they would never even notice. It would just blend in with the other odors of their natural habitat.
Double Cola Revenge Play of the Day.
