A Message From Flea

Dear everybody, When we were asked by the NFL and Bruno to play our song Give It Away at the Super Bowl, it was made clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums, and guitar would be pre-recorded. I understand the NFL’s stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage, there a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the t.v. viewers. There was not any room for argument on this, the NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period. The Red Hot Chili Peppers stance on any sort of miming has been that we will absolutely not do it. The last time we did it (or tried to) was in the late 80’s, we were thrown off of ‘The Top Of the Pops’ television program in the U.K. during rehearsals because we refused to mime properly, I played bass with my shoe, John played guitar atop Anthony’s shoulders, and we basically had a wrestling match onstage, making a mockery of the idea that it was a real live performance. We mimed on one or two weird MTV shows before that and it always was a drag. We take our music playing seriously, it is a sacred thing for us, and anyone who has ever seen us in concert (like the night before the Super Bowl at the Barclays Center), knows that we play from our heart, we improvise spontaneously, take musical risks, and sweat blood at every show. We have been on the road for 31 years doing it. So, when this Super Bowl gig concept came up, there was a lot of confusion amongst us as whether or not we should do it, but we eventually decided, it was a surreal-like, once in a life time crazy thing to do and we would just have fun and do it. We had given this a lot of thought before agreeing to do it, and besides many a long conversation amongst ourselves, I spoke with many musician friends for whom I have the utmost respect, and they all said they would do it if asked, that it was a wild trippy thing to do, what the hell. Plus, we the RHCP all love football too and that played a big part in our decision. We decided that, with Anthony singing live, that we could still bring the spirit and freedom of what we do into the performance, and of course we played every note in the recording specially for the gig. I met and spoke with Bruno, who was a beautiful dude, a real talented musician, and we worked out something that seemed like it would be fun. – See more at:

“Flea” tweets about the halftime game show

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

It’s been all over the net since The Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage for one song during the Super Bowl Halftime Pepsi show. Clearly one could tell  TRHCP instruments weren’t plugged in.

aaaaaaa

So they sort of took a beating for not standing up to “the MAN” and insisting they play a song “live” they wrote 20 something years ago… Some called them sell outs and others called them posers… But in that world of being seen by millions of people at one time what would you do? Argue your point about being “true” to the music or sucking it up and having as much fun as you can with it? I think  TRHCP guys did the right thing. They got their music once again out there in the modern world and not just on classic rock stations. Here is Flea’s tweet. I think it is open and honest and should stop all the “hating”. And obviously they poked “the MAN” in the eye anyway because you can’t fool the fans and they knew it but got away with it and hide it from “the MAN”. Hats off but not the socks to the guys in TRHCP.

Happy Birthday Alice Cooper!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Alice Cooper - From The Inside - FrontIt’s Alice Cooper‘s birthday today. The original King of Shock Rock. This first song is from his 1978 album “From the Inside”. As far as I am concerned it was his best body of work. A masterpiece. Not one bad or lame song on it. I remember listening to this love song “How you gonna see me now” and the whole album over and over again in my room. I would stare at the album gate fold (which folded out like doors). Inside the album was a photograph of a sanitarium and all the characters that are on the album in the songs are presented there. Nurse Rosetta, JackKnife Johnny and all the rest! Also, if you looked closely into Alice’s eyes on the cover you can see the people inside his head!

Kids these days, I guess maybe they can relate but how so I do not know. When I was growing up it was pre internet. Meaning all I had to go by was the album art, the album and my imagination. Music wasn’t as disposable as it is now. I didn’t have unlimited music at my finger tips. I got an album or a tape of the month (wow remember those??!!) and that’s all I had but in reality, all I needed. My friends and my memories are locked up in these albums. They are always there waiting on me to show up and play. They never get old.

The album means so much to me to that you can see the really cool lunchbox my friend from childhood got me for Christmas this year after the videos!

Enjoy some of the songs from the album below!

Stone Sour-Love Gun (KISS cover)

First couple of minutes of the video has Corey’s colorful language so if you have tender ears don’t hit play…Before they start the song Corey does a pretty good impression of Paul Stanley’s stage banter too!

Many thanks to Al for sending in the link!
