My Superheros’ and the people that played them…Hit or miss?

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

First off, Hollywood wants to remake everything on what appears to be 15 to 20 year recycle cycles. They ran out of ideas a long time ago. But here at work we got into a discussion on who “really” played the part better in the superhero movies… There have been what, 5 different people that have played batman in the last 20 years? That’s too many and some are better than others but which one is “batman”? Christian Slater? Val Kilmer?George Clooney? Get my point? So I thought I would compile my list of characters I liked and the people who I thought played the role the best.  Jump in on the conversation.

Here they are

Superman.

Christopher Reeves…Hands down. Those movies were awesome. He “became” Superman. I watched the reruns from the 50’s of George Reeves. George was too old and too heavy to be Superman. Christopher Reeves was perfect…I loved the scene were Clark was building the fire and he accidentally “burnt” his hand and Lois Lane reached for it and saw that it wasn’t burnt and realized he was Superman..

The Joker.

Cesar Romero, was the “funny” Joker. I remember growing up and enjoying watching those Batman shows on WGN. He played the perfect part for the 60’s version of batman. His character was perfect for that style. But saying that, Jack Nicholson did an ok job of revisiting the role in 1989. But having said all that. The winner goes to Heath Ledger. He took it to a whole new level. His portrayal of the Joker was over the top.”You know how I got these scars”?

The Hulk.

The recent CGI movie about the incredible Hulk was awful. I realize it was more inline with the comic book version but to me it was just too unbelievable. Way too fake. As far as I am concerned there has only been one Hulk and that Hulk is Lou Ferrigno.

Ben Grimm. (The Thing)

No doubt Michael Chiklis is Ben Grimm. There is really no comparison out there but his way of portraying the “Thing” is as great as Heath Ledger playing the Joker. He was meant for the role. “It’s Clobbering TIME!”

Spiderman.

Here we go with another movie that has been recycled a few times through. We currently have “another” Spiderman movie out. I will have to say that I thought Tobey Maquire made the best Peter Parker and Spiderman. He had that innocence about him as Peter Parker and the web slinger.

Wonder Woman.

There is no other so don’t even ask. Lynda Carter is “Wonder woman”. For a young male ( and probably some young females too) growing up in the 70’s, she did it for me. With her good looks and that outfit, well, no need to say anymore…

Iron Man.

No doubt Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. He is the perfect person to play the role. AS Tony Stark, he is rich and arrogant and has the brains to back it all up.Once again, hands down. No one else is noble enough to grace that role…Agree?

Batman.

I am kinda partial to Adam West as campy as he was. Being that when we got cable at the house when I was in the 5th grade the first thing to come on the TV was batman. It really was. My grandparents were hooking up the cable box and Batman appeared! So, Adam West is Batman to me. However,  Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton did a great job of playing the role. Christan Slater I think is too dull and plain. His voice is all wrong and he doesn’t animate the character well at all to me. George Clooney himself has said he single handedly almost ruined the Batman franchise with his portrayal of him.

Batgirl.

Once again I gotta go with old Skool. Yvonne Craig was hot back in the day as Commissioner Gordon’s daughter Barbara by day and Bat girl by night. It’s the same twist as Clark Kent by day and superman by night, or better yet, Librarian by day and erotic chick at night…Alicia Silverstone just didn’t rock the costume like Yvonne did in my opinion.

Robin.

Not sure about Chris O’Donnell being Robin. I remember Burt Ward but that’s going old skool. So I will this one open.

Alfred.

Alan Napier did a great job but so did Michael Caine. What about Michael Gough? Which one would you pick?

My review of Kiss’s new album “MONSTER”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

So there is a leaked copy of it floating around the net, so I checked it out…

First off. I am a huge KISS fan from way back when they ruled the world. I stuck with them from ALIVE 1and through the disco era “Dynasty” which I thought was a great album by the way. I even forgave them for the “Unmasked” album which did have a couple of good songs on it. One being “A world without Heroes”. I even stuck by them and watched them “unmask” on MTV like millions of other people did. I was in there when Peter quit/got canned and I continued going to see them despite Eric Carr (GOD rest his soul) playing wayyyy to fast on the drums. I was at the show in Evansville Indiana when Vinnie ( plays too fast too) Vincent pushed his amps over and KISS left his ass in parking lot and moved on after the show. I hung in there. I was still there when Grudge took over and songs like “Unholy” was blasting on the radio. Great stuff. Then came the farewell tour. I was still there. I remember Julio Wallace and me driving all night back from a gig in Michigan just to get to Evansville the next day to catch the show.

Then came the extended farewell tour. And another tour. Hell, I even bought the new KISS comics. Then came Psycho Circus”. I even got that. Then Peter and Ace quit/got canned. I get all that. That’s business. I didn’t like it but its not my business.  And then my hope and loyalty started waning…But I still went and saw the show.

Then came KISS “Boom”. more like a fizzle…. Not the band I grew up basically worshiping. More tours, more merchandise, etc. I get it but I no longer subscribe to it. Maybe I am growing up. I wish I wasn’t. I mean this is the band I would have, like most kids my age back in the late 70’s. would have helped KISS invade a small Country if they asked us to.

And now “MONSTER”. The hype machine is in full swing. “It’s a classic KISS album”. “Just four guys writing together”. etc, etc, etc…

So I checked out the leaked copy. You know what? MONSTER should have been called MONSTER LAME”. The song “Hell or Hallelujah”. That’s a great song. Reminds me of the KISS I grew up with. But after that the album just loses steam, tanks and falls over dead. I hear a bunch of fillers and songs they will never play again.

Maybe its time bands just released powerful singles one at time. The old album way of doing things is over. I am sad about it. But the songs just don’t hold up. No hits…

I don’t expect KISS to reinvent the wheel. I know they are no longer starving and it shows. A band that is starving has the “Us against the world attitude”. KISS doesn’t has that. They haven’t had it for a long time. It’s not their fault. They have been mega successful. But I think its time to hand the      baton off to someone else as bad as I hate to say that. I will go ahead and say Motley Crue needs to do the same thing but that’s another story.

So to finish off my review. KISS meant everything music to me. This album doesn’t cut it. Save your money or do something good with it. Maybe send it to “Wounded Warriors” in honor of KISS. KISS Supports that group and I commend them on that.

tears are falling…

I miss my KISS…

sincerely,

chuck

Quiet Riot’s bassist Kelli Garni’s new Book “Angels with Dirty Faces” excerpt

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

For more information, go to this location.

In an interview with UltimateRandyRhoads.com, Garni stated about Rhoads, “It’s too bad that people never really got to know him, because he was a much bigger person than he was a guitar player. His guitar playing, as good as it is, is very hard to overshadow. But what a great person. They always say when people die, ‘He was the world’s nicest guy. What a sweet man…’ even if the guy was a piece of shit. But that was not the case with Randy. He was a very good person. He was a practical joker. He liked to pull pranks on people, and sometimes they were even a little on the mean side. But he would never hurt anybody. He was a very wise guy, as far as helping you out with problems. He was very intuitive, very sensitive. A good heart. Guitar playing was such a big thing — it was all he ever did. You almost had to be around him twenty four hours a day to know him outside of his guitar playing. When he talked on the phone, he was on the guitar. When he was eating his dinner, he had his guitar in his lap and he played between bites. When he was watching TV, he was playing guitar. Always the guitar. You literally had to be in a car with him, with driving, to not have him playing a guitar. So very few people got to know him well. . . It was almost as if there wasn’t even a person outside of that guitar, to most people. And I think that adds to his mystique. He didn’t really get the opportunity to do many interviews. Very, very few. He was somewhat introverted. If we’d do a show, afterwards you’d walk out the door and there would be a line of groupies. He didn’t go for that. He left with his girlfriend. Or maybe he kinda went off away from everybody and he had a drink. He wasn’t really into partying, so to speak, but when he was, that’s when the practical jokes came.”
