Smoke them if you got them? Uh no…

It’s your freedom to smoke. I gladly accept that and will defend your right to do it. But, you gotta ask yourself…why do it when this is what you are getting in return from doing it.

KickActs Joke of the day returns…

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

(click a Google ad for me while your at it)

A Chinese guy is sitting next to a Jewish guy on an airplane.

Out of the blue, the Jewish guy slaps the Chinese guy so hard that his head reverberates.

The Chinese guy asks, “What did you do that for?”

The Jewish guy says, “That was for Pearl Harbor.”

The Chinese guy says, “But Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese.”

The Jewish guy says, “Japanese, Chinese, Korean, it’s all the same to me.”

A few minutes of silence pass when out of the blue the Chinese guy slaps the Jewish guy so hard that HIS head reverberates.

The Jewish guy asks “What did you do that for?”

The Chinese guy says, “That was for the Titanic.”

The Jewish guy says, “But the Titanic was sunk by an iceberg.”

The Chinese guy says, “Steinberg, Goldberg, Iceberg, it’s all the same to me.”

Ten Questions with “The Brothers Rigney”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour. First off

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

tbr_nThe Brothers Rigney is a rock duo based out of Austin, TX. The founding members, Paul and Bryan, are brothers and form the core of this eclectic, melodic rock project. Come visit us at www.thebrothersrigney.com or www.facebook/thebrothersrigney to read the full story, see pictures and listen to our music.

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Our musical heros include anybody who has ever picked up an instrument and made a living. Guitar influences such as Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page and Bass influences ranging from Jaco Pastorius to Flea. All of these people studied and mastered their craft and were able to share it with the rest of us.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Hang in there. It’s a marathon, not a race. Don’t get greedy and chase money. Do it because you love it or don’t do it at all.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

We were doing a gig early on and the drummer who was sitting had a monster case of stage jitters. We started the set and noticed that we were going way too fast. We tried to signal him to slow down but he just kept going faster. Between songs we tried talking to him but it only got worse. By the time the set was over, we had played an hour’s worth of music in 40 minutes. We called it our Alvin and the Chipmunks night.

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

The worst gig ever was an outdoor gig we did one October in Texas. Fall is generally mild in Texas and a great time of year to be outside. It figures that a cold front would blow in and drop the temp 20 degrees during the gig. Our hands nearly froze to the frets.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

We are great fans of boobs, but aren’t sure we can consider that a hobby. Does playing a different instrument count?

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

It’s growing like wildfire. There’s far more opportunity than just a few years ago. Thanks to social media and the proliferation of quality tools to create and record, anybody with skill can now get involved in music.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Paul is a certified mechanical watchmaker. It’s pretty uncommon and he’s great at fixing our stuff.

Bryan really loves his cat. He spoils her and calls her his Princess.

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

Paul says he into Mary Ann because a good farm raised gal will take care of you on a cold night.

Bryan says that all three are too tall, but in a pinch he’d go with Ginger because she’d laugh at his jokes.

Our last question  called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Just buy the album. The more you buy, the more we play, write and play some more. With a little luck, we’ll be able to do our writing in the islands. So please, buy the album.

Styx “Music Time” Worst video or Genius?

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Not sure how to take it. On one side, its funny and other the other side, it reminds me of a David Lee Roth video. His videos in this manner work…but does the Styx one work? Dennis De Young seems to be playing the role of Lou Costello?

notice Tommy Shaw is only in one scene. I guess by the time this came out the band was done. But enjoy the 80’s “HUGE” humor 😉

Ten Questions with “Tan”!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and where you can be found at on the web.

Thanks for having me! My name is TAN, and I’m a Los Angeles based vocalist and songwriter, originally from Malaysia. I just released my debut single “Heat Wave“ which I collaborated with producer Mario Marchetti (Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez ) and Grammy winning engineer Evren Göknar (The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mariah Carey) and it’s now on iTunes and Amazon. You can find me on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/tanofficialmusic, Twitter – https://twitter.com/tanrealmusic and I also love posting random stuff on my Instagram – http://instagram.com/tanofficial

 Tan_leg Original Final

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

I’ve always been a huge fan of pop and rock music. Simple Plan was my favorite band during my high school years; they inspired me to pick up my guitar and write a song whenever I needed to express myself.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Learn about music business because I think it is just as important as music theory. Always stay humble no matter what.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Well I had my debut TV appearance when I was 10 on Astro Kids Talent Quest, (Season 1) which is Malaysia’s version of Star Search. I’ll never forget the attention I got from my friends and teachers at school at that time haha

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worst gig” ever story.

One time there were a lot of drunk people and some of them were showing me how to sing while I was performing. So… I never went back to that venue again lol

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

I really like to collect guitar picks because I know for a fact that they wouldn’t cost me a fortune haha

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of?

I don’t think that the present music scene is lacking anything. Music is art and there’s really no right and wrong.

Tell us something about you that we wouldn’t expect to hear… (Like their hobbies or something like that)

Mmm I don’t know…Well I guess I should tell you guys about my guilty pleasure, which is eating before going to bed every night haha

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls. Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

Well I don’t really want to imagine myself stranded on an island but the answer is Mary Ann. lol

Our last question is called Shout It Out Loud. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and SHOUT IT OUT LOUD

Thanks guys for having me! Be sure to download “Heat Wave” on iTunes and be on the look out for the music video coming soon.

Keep rocking!

KickActs interviews Rick Devin!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour. First off I want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk to us here today, as i know our readers have been requesting us get you in here somehow some way. You folks have been described by your fans as internet sensations in this interview we will attempt to figure out how this artist became such a great performer and what they have going forward.

Rick_Devin-Banner

1. Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

Rick Devin (RD): Thanks guys, it’s an honor to be here. Well let’s see, I’ve been playing guitar & singing for over 4 decades, have performed on thousands of stages worldwide with some of music’s biggest names, have been nominated or won dozens of music awards and now we just released my ninth solo album, “Old School 2: Rock Hits of the 60s& 70s”. It’s a collection of 12 of our favorite classic rock songs, featuring keyboardist/vocalist Chris Pitman (Guns N’ Roses), drummer Chet McCracken (Doobie Brothers, Joe Walsh, America, Stevie Nicks), guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses), guitarist Chris Pinnick (Chicago, Chuck Negron, Herb Alpert), guitarist Philip Donnelly (Donovan, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Everly Brothers, John Prine, Gary Moore), drummer Stuart Lawrence (Donovan), saxophonist Beto Saroldi (Gilberto Gil) and vocalists Maria Ricart, Manoel Pires and Rosa Lucena and my brother Sean Devin… All of the online music websites have our music; here are just a few with their direct links: rickdevin.com | Apple iTunes | Amazon.com | CD Baby

2. Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Rick_Devin_at_2012_GRAMMY+Awards(2)RD: I was born in 1960 outside of Boston, Massachusetts and started playing guitar at age nine. My earliest musical influences were the popular bands of that time, such as The Beatles, The Animals, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, etc. During my teen years, during the 1970s, my repertoire grew to include songs by bands such as America, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Willie Nelson and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I guess I’d have to say that my ‘sound’, instrumentally and vocally, is an amalgamation of all of the above.

3. Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

RD: Have fun, don’t give up and just stick to it!! Learn to make music from your heart, practice until your fingers bleed and share your music with your family & friends – eventually if you follow your heart, you’ll be recording albums and performing in front of thousands of fans.

4. Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

RD: I have had the honor of performing on stage with many of music’s biggest names, but for me the best part is audience participation – with everyone just singing along, dancing and having a good time.

5. On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

RD: A very ‘challenging gig’ I had was when I dislocated my left shoulder just prior to walking on stage in Colorado to perform with country music star Michael Martin Murphey (Wildfire, Geronimo’s Cadillac, What’s Forever For)… I performed the 45 minute set, with my guitar slid to the right so that my left arm could reach the guitar neck. No one in the audience even knew I was playing with a dislocated shoulder, ha-ha… “The Show Must Go On”, right? I got off the stage and went straight to the Hospital Emergency Room, Ha-ha…

Band Portraits Banner

6. Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

RD: Music Business for Independent Recording Artists never really ends, so I’m pretty much face down most of the time…but when I do get a chance, I enjoy traveling, skiing, mountaineering and genealogy.

7. What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

RD: For me the biggest change in the music industry has been in recording techniques… I first started recording with a ‘compact cassette recorder’ in the mid-70s using only one microphone to pick up the entire audio sound, ha-ha. Whereas on this recent studio release, we recorded up to thirty different tracks, in nine different studios, on three different continents, and shared all of the audio files via yousendit.com. Wow, we’ve come a long way baby.

8. Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

RD: How about if I tell you about how we all came together as a band to create this recording and what inspired it? You see it started in March of 2010, during the Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy World Tour, GN’R band members Chris Pitman, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal & Frank Ferrer stopped by my home on Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro. We listened to my first “Old School: Hits of the 60s & 70s” CD and conversations started right then about recording a ‘sequel’ / ‘follow up’ CD. The question I would ask each Guest Musician is, “If you could actually choose… What would be a ‘Classic Rock Song’ (from the 60s & 70s) that you’ve always dreamed of recording, but never got a chance to?”… Chris Pitman wanted to record some Beatles’ songs, “Bumblefoot” a tune from ZZ Top, Chris Pinnick some Clapton, etc., etc… You see, many of these guys are touring or recording what ‘Band Management’ tells them to record, so for me to ask them, ‘What do YOU wish YOU could record?’, puts a nice twist on things. I of course needed to like their song selections (which was super easy) and in most cases the songs were already within my Repertoire anyway. Chet McCracken and Chris Pinnick both worked with me on the first “Old School” CD. They’re both incredible musicians and it was great to be working with both of them again. In May 2011, in a Pub in Tipperary, Ireland, I met Philip Donnelly & Stuart Lawrence. We performed a few songs together and agreed to work together on my Old School 2: Rock Hits of the 60s & 70s. Their choice was a tune written by Slim Harpo that had been covered by The Yardbirds.

9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

RD: Mary Ann… I guess I’ve always been more smitten with the girl next door charms…

10. # 10 is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

RD: I’d like to take a chance to thank our listeners, anyone who’s bought a CD / Download, or come to one of our shows, thank you very much because we wouldn’t be able to do this without you. Cheers, you guys rock!

Ten questions with “Tornado Rose”!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Once again many thanks to James for the interview!

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

Hi, my name is Brooke Bell and I am the singer, guitarist and autoharp player for the band Tornado Rose.

trcAs far as our style of music, I would consider us alternative-bluegrass, alternative folk, alternative rock, alternative alternative. It is so hard to classify our style but we don’t really care to. The scene gets too caught up in what things are called. It is inherent human nature to find patterns and classify things, it is our way of making sense of the world, it preserves our illusion of control and it helps us function amid the chaos and mysteries of the universe. When you focus on what something is called, you lose sight of what it actually is; its nature, purpose, essence is lost to a mere word, a word we made up, which may mean something different to you than me. Music is a way to transcend that; genres, grammys, top 20s are only efforts to systematize and quantify that which must never be systematized or quantified. I think we see plenty of evidence of that corruption in some of what passes for music in the mainstream and the stifling effect it can have on creativity.

We can be found at www.tornadorose.com or www.facebook.com/tornadorose

Tornado Rose Alternate Hi Res

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

I would have to say Eryka Badu and Jill Scott are two big ones, as is Nina Simone. Jill Scott is a poetess first and foremost and her first album, ‘Who is Jill Scott’ changed my life. It was the real thing, baby. No candy pop, no sugar coat. The song she wrote ‘The Thickness’ gave power to a soft and vulnerable place in my soul. Eryka Badu is a warrior philosopher, she comes from a very deep place and her lyrics move tectonic plates, they are so powerful. When she sings ‘peace after revolution’ it stirs up something. She isn’t singing about being cheated on and coming back for more, she isn’t trying to sell me Reeboks or Citibank cards. Her music is rebellion. I love Bob Marley too. The roots of reggae music look a lot like the roots of bluegrass music and Americana. His music reminds me that we are all one family. I and I.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Forget money. Do what you do because you can’t not do it. Do it because you would do it if there weren’t a single person around to hear it, let alone pay you for it. Forget Cristal and Benzies- that’s the lie. Imagine the first humans to make a percussive beat on an animal skin under a primeval moon and the first to raise their voices in song, dancing around a fire. Imagine a force powerful enough to transcend our ideas of time and our illusion of being separate from one another- that’s the truth.

tri

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Where to begin? There was the time the lead singer face-planted before a big gig in Lawrence at the world-famous Bottleneck. (She took it like a champ but still refused to use the disgusting toilet in the green room, no matter whose venerated ass had sat it) My personal favorite was the long weekend we spent in Boulder at the foot of a mountain. Songs were hanging so heavy in the air there that we were able to simply pluck them like overripe apples. ‘Ripeness is all.’ As Shakespeare said. It was a beautiful moment in time. Ripe with perfection.

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

We were hired to play a 50th wedding anniversary by mistake once. It was horrible. They thought we were a country band and people were coming to the stage between every song to request Garth Brooks or some such nonsense- basically anything else at all. To make matters worse, it was in an auditorium just like the one you probably had in highschool too, so it was basically like every nightmare I ever had growing up. Except I wasn’t naked.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

Pictures of boobs, for sure. I’m so glad I’m not the only one! Besides bad poetry and decent prose, you mean? A little amateur astronomy on a clear night, the occasional feat of athleticism when the mood strikes, a little dabble in Eastern philosophy here, a smattering of ancient Chinese mysticism there. A little palm reading on occasion and if you punch me very slowly, I can defend myself with Kung Fu. Wing Chung style, naturally. Who do I look like, Jackie Chan?

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

We hail from Wichita, Kansas and, while the heartland is typically associated with bad country and top 20, the local scene has gradually been improving over the last few years. There is now far less demand for bad cover bands and more appreciation of great original material and lively stage performances. I blame the internet. There is no longer any excuse for liking bad music. Plus, with Spotify, we can publically shame anyone who’s playlist resembles that of a pre-pubescent suburban tweenager- and justly so. Just look at the difference between satellite radio and local radio- it is like comparing a rocket ship to a dodo bird. The days of two overworked uber-produced songs and 10 pathetically crappy filler ones being able to garner platinum sales of a 16.99 CD because we were all too stupid to understand it was robbery are gone, and good riddance.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Our drummer is a ginger who can rap like nobody’s business and jump like Dick Fosbury, post Flop; I’m talking fucking groundbreaking type shit. He doesn’t need drums either, give him a gum wrapper and a zipper and you’ve got percussion. Our Guitar player is one of the most freakishly athletic people I have ever known; I have seen him play basketball, baseball, volleyball, football- even dodgeball. ‘Dominate’ doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’ve also never seen him get mad; never, not even once. Our bass player is from another planet- Crypton perhaps. He might also be a cy-borg, its hard to tell really. He does more shit in one day than most people get done in their whole lives. One night when we were playing a gig on the road he talked in his sleep: “Where. Where is. Where is the party.” In a perfect robot-voice.

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

I’m a chick, so I get to hook up with all of them. Cause I’m a giver. That’s how being a chick works, didn’t you know? Poor girls anyway. I doubt the Skipper, Gilligan or Mr. Howell could find the relevant lady-parts with two hands and a flashlight improvised from a coconut. However, there was the Professor…if anyone could grasp the concept of the ‘stimulation gap’, it’s him- that’s just good science. Science!

Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

SEPERATENESS IS AN ILLUSION. OUR INTERCONNECTION TO EACH OTHER IS WHAT IS REAL. MUSIC IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL, PRIMAL FORCES ON EARTH, TEARING AWAY OUR ILLUSIONS, IF ONLY FOR A MOMENT. IT IS THE PROOF OF OUR HUMANITY, OF OUR DIVINITY. FROM NOTHING, SOMETHING. MUSIC IS CREATION, CREATING IS LIFE, THE CREATION LIVES FOREVER.
