GhostLitKingdomMAIN

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and were you can be found online.

We are an LA based Indie Alternative Pop band new to the scene this year. You can find our music and photos and shows and life-long secrets, etc. on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reverbnation, Bandcamp, Soundcloud and ghostlitkingdom.com.

Who are your musical heroes and influences? Why?

Gotta go with bands/artists like Daughter, Ben Howard, Bon Iver, Matt Corby, etc. for the courage to do something outside of the box but still within the realm of soulful, humble, emotional artistic expression. Such talented players as well. If we can reach that threshold, the combination of respectable talent and music itself, we will be very grateful indeed.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in the music business?

Do not underestimate the amount of effort it will take just to get off the ground. Things like professionalism, passion, dedication, financial commitment, self awareness, patience, etc. are of the utmost importance. Do not be afraid of failure. There will be many of them along the way.

What piece of advice did you ignore that you wish you hadn’t?

Be wary of the Hollywood scams. We lost almost $1,000 once to a bogus PR scheme back when we were just starting in the LA scene. Things like that make it hard not to label Hollywood as the cesspool of all human waste.

Do you have a greatest gig story or worst gig horror story you’d like to share?

We played an acoustic show in Santa Barbara a while back and as Taylor went to take a breath right before the huge vocal outro of one of the songs he breathed in, mouth against the microphone, and inhaled a small mouthful of some mysterious fluid through the screen of the mic that had, apparently, accumulated in the microphone body over the course of time. Needless to say, he nearly puked on stage and we learned then what it truly means to fear the house equipment.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of peckers or boobs?  Make sock puppets? Sit in the dark and eat Cheetos?

We thoroughly enjoy playing a select group of sports. Not that we are terribly good at them but it’s just fun to throw the football or play 21 (Andrew and Jason love a good basketball run around) before a show or on an off day on tour. Ela is pretty impressive on skates too, as are Michael and Taylor who grew up playing hockey.

What do you think about the current music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

It’s cool how little indie scenes are popping up here and there in LA and its surrounding areas now that the strip and it’s kitsch are starting to kind of fade out. On a grander scale, it seems like we are coming into a scene where the musicianship and songwriting is coming back into appreciation a little more than in recent years. Of course, with the technology age in full swing and the record companies trying to crank out pop hits left and right we are still bound to be fed the trash every once in awhile but things like Arcade Fire and Bon Iver winning Grammys certainly instill a sense of hope for the future of indie music itself.

Do you think reality shows like American Idol, X Factor and The Voice have helped or hurt the music industry as a whole?

It’s kind of a David Bowie thing in that it goes both ways. There are some seriously ridiculous things about them like the way it is all so governed by viewers so it’s often not even really about the art but there are some very real upsides as well. The music and artists that come out of it is  the obvious point to make but there are subtleties as well. For instance, Andrew (our bass player) used to work on some of the reality shows when he was growing up in Melbourne and he always says one of the coolest things about it was that when he was working So You Think You Can Dance he was able to expose the viewers to some really good music that they may never have heard elsewhere by working the songs into the show and dances themselves. So these shows definitely have the capability to do wonderful things for music. It’s just a matter of whether they decide to do so.

What is your opinion of unauthorized music downloads?

In a perfect world it would not even be an issue but the parasitic nature of the human race is unavoidable. Overall, however, it’s pretty unfortunate that it happens. The internet gives people that little buffer of pseudo safety between themselves and the people that it affects. It is far less likely that thousands of people would steal from a mom and pop store that makes their living off the merchandise in the store but that’s basically the same idea with illegally downloading music, especially from up and coming bands.

Tell us something about you/each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear.

Jason was in the Air Force for six years! Ela grew up in Turkey and, thus, speaks fluent Turkish. Andrew grew up in Australia and, thus, speaks fluent Australian. Mike studied classical acoustic guitar in college and performed in a touring quartet. Taylor went to Arizona State University out of high school on scholarship to study Kinesiology… and hated it.

Hypothetical situation. You’re on Gilligan’s Island and you get to hook up with only one of the survivors… Which one and why?

Mary Ann and Ginger would be the obvious top candidates but they both seem like they’d be expecting and, thus, unappreciative. Gilligan would stumble through the whole experience so he is out. Mr. Howell… multi millionaire(former billionaire…what a tragedy) and Republican. Pass. There are probably few things that could produce more self worth dilemmas than a casual sexual experience with a PHD while marooned on an island so Hinkley is out as well. Captain would playfully refer to your genitals as “Little Buddy” so that leaves Mrs. Howell as the most suitable choice. Probably in need of a good kiss anyway. (Editor’s note: someone did their homework on this one! BRAVO! 🙂

Do you know what a vinyl album is and have your ever purchased one? If so, what was it?

Ela and her family collect them! The last one she bought was Daughter Live at Air Studios. Such an incredible record.

You’re marooned on an island with Justin Bieber. Do you choke him out the first night in his sleep or what?

No. Would be such a waste. He gets to live if he promises us a home cooked dinner party with Usher.

What is your opinion of Miley Cyrus?

She’s growing on us as the years go on. She’s no longer the encapsulating body for the metaphoric death to all things music but there is still a good distance yet to go. Wrecking Ball is definitely a guilty pleasure for Taylor, though. If every GLK chorus hit as hard as that one he would be satisfied.

Which would you rather hear in concert?  Lip-synching or real vocals?

Real vocals every day of the week. Unless it’s John Krasinski on Jimmy Fallon’s lip sync battle. Flawless performance.

Who, or what, is the next big thing?

Still holding out for Tupac to come back for real. That hologram was way too life-like for it to just be “made in his likeness.” It was foreshadowing for sure.

One artist you can’t get enough of and can’t live without is… Why?

Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters. They are a musical revelation that will live through the ages.

Confession time. Share a secret about yourself.

None of us can read or write.

Favorite movie of all time and why?

Dünyayi Kurtaran Adam (1982). Turkish dollar store Star Wars illegally using unlicensed scores and scenes from other movies. An instant classic.

Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Since we are a young band, that most people are yet to be acquainted with, it seems prudent to talk about what music means to us. Without getting to soapy on the subject, we just want to express our appreciation for its existence as a whole. We are trying to write songs that can reach an emotional recognition with the people who listen to them and then perform them in such a way that reflects that sentiment. Music has done wonderful things for the preservation of our sanity through that type of connection that we have experienced with artists and songs that are dear to us and we would be eternally fulfilled if we were able to give that back so thank you for letting us share Ghost Lit Kingdom with you guys. You have no idea what it means to us.

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

(please comment/Like on Facebook and share)

10009848_10152322011263582_201437453_n

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and were you can be found online.

Well we’re a three piece band from the state of Texas and we can be found on many sites online but our primary 3 are ReverbNation Twitter and Facebook those sites are :

www. ReverbNation com / feel never real

www. Twitter com / feel never real

www. Facebook.com / feel never real

Who are your musical heroes and influences? Why?

We have many different influences, most in the genre of Rock, such as nirvana Guns and Roses, but we’ve even been influenced by older country artists as well such as , Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr and Ronnie Milsap Why, because its what we like.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in the music business?

DONT DO IT!!!! :), Naw , its tough tho. You’ve always had to put in the time but it seems to be tougher these days in alot of aspects that weren’t as tough before. Such as the amount of money to be made is somewhat less than before and thats fine just dont expect to be a multi millionaire and you’d be alright.

Touring is definitely tough as well not alot of people can eat the same sandwich for a month! ! 🙂

What piece of advice did you ignore that you wish you hadn’t?

we weren’t given alot of advice, unfortunately we really didnt know anyone in the industry when we moved to Dallas area so we got taken for lots of rides, but still thats how u learn. Ive shared some advice with others that im sure they wished they’d listened to

Do you have a greatest gig story or worst gig horror story you’d like to share?

definitely have had some awesome ones and some bad ones , the awesome ones are generally filled with people and they’re all singing the songs but nothing really specific without divulging some graphic information 🙂

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of peckers or boobs? Make sock puppets? Sit in the dark and eat Cheetos?

Personally I love drag racing and more specifically 1/8th mile track, I have a truck I like to race and also have some friends with actual fast cars that are fun to be apart of as well

What do you think about the current music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

67317_10151527046758582_382955774_nIts definitely weird, not near as many bands pushing to get thru and venues are drying up, so its a definite chang, hopefully its just a phase , but who knows

Do you think reality shows like American Idol, X factor and The Voice have helped or hurt the music industry as a whole?

well if u ever get to look at a “contract” from those folks run unless u want to be a famous , poor, puppet

What is your opinion of unauthorized music downloads?

I dont really think there’s much to be done about it, that genie is out of the bottle. Bout all I think we can do is embrace it and hope those folks come to shows.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear.

I am a idiot (Tim)

Shea dances real well

And Mat is Shelley’s new boyfriend (sick in the head)

Hypothetical situation. You’re on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the survivors… Which one and why?

Maryann im into the girl next door type

Do you know what a vinyl album is and have your ever purchased one? If so, what was it

When I was young I found a record player of my parents, so one day I was at the pawn shop and saw “appetite for destruction” on vinyl and remembered my older brother said it was awesome, so 5 $ bought my first record! ! So yeah I know 🙂

You’re marooned on an island with Justin Bieber. Do you choke him out the first night in his sleep or what?

Naw im afraid im a talkin kind of person so I figure someone’s better than nothing to talk to

What is your opinion of Miley Cyrus?418765_10151133121653582_1985904658_n

She’s obviously talented like her or not, its a shame to me that she’s surrounded by label and management folks that encourage her demise for a spectacle to sell records

Which would you rather hear in concert? Lip synching or real vocals?

Backing tracks to me are a joke , no band should do this

Who, or what, is the next big thing?

Honestly who knows, hopefully we are 🙂

One artist you can’t get enough of and can’t live without is…

Beatles truthfully

Confession time. Share a secret about yourself.

I love people, but I really enjoy kind of keeping to myself I’m not shy I just like to observe people

Favorite movie of all time and why.

The aviator I really like the cinematography it just has a real feel for the depiction of the time I think it’s pretty awesome Howard Hughes tells the US government to kiss his ass more or less

Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

We are beginning to tour this summer and are looking forward to seeing is many fans as we can so please if you see we’re making it to your town come out and see us you won’t regret it

KickActs interviews Maurice Carmon “Mlyrics”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour. First off

I want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk to us here today, as i know our readers have been requesting us get you in here some how some way. You folks have been described by your fans as internet

sensations in this interview we will attempt to figure out how this artist became such a great performer and what they have going forward.

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web. I am a solo R&B/Soul act. Born and raised out of Washington D.C. let’s just say as a writer as well my music include stories of love to just real life situations. My music can be found at sites such as soundcloud, reverbnation, myspace, basically all the social sites as well I had an official release in Oct 2013.

                   Twitter: https://twitter.com/Mlyrics
                   Myspace: https://myspace.com/mlyrics
            Reverbnation: http://www.reverbnation.com/mauricecarmonmlyrics
                SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/mlyrics

Maurice Pic 3Who are your musical heroes, influences & why? Now, if I was to name everyone you guys would not have enough room to publish anyone else’s story (I am just joking). Some of my influences are Joe, Charlie Wilson, Sam Cook, and sum it up all of the real soul and R&B singers.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid? This is no secret but for those who do not know or may not understand why their music career may be at a standstill, every artist must have or make great connections which are just a part of what it takes to make it these days. Second you need a budget because as they say you get what you pay for and I am speaking in regards to their promotion, marketing, and branding. Third have some not good music but top notch music. It has to be top notch because everyone these days is an artist and many of them are actually coming up with some good music. Last, keep the mess at home. The industry is a business.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share? Not really, any and every time I perform, I love it.

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story. Not really as I stated earlier I just love to perform so there is no “worse gig”, now someone else may think it was bad, lol but I just love to perform.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs? No stamps collecting, or hats and unfortunately I have never been a good drawer so boob drawing is totally out (this was a funny one) but I am a writer. Writing is my love and ultimately first love. I have written all of my material as well I have written and worked with other artist from Snoop to Jon B and the ones in between were nothing short of amazing as well like Charlie Wilson, K-CI, Samantha Jade, MidWest City, Day 26 and many others.

USE_Mlyrics(1)

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that? Oh boy, you’re trying to have some people upset at me huh? Just messing, well today I believe that the music scene is a little everywhere. It’s not where it was when the real and good talent determined the scene but it’s popularity that determines it now. I mean there are some artist that lucked up and had the right financial backing and connection so they got in then on the other hand there is some of the most amazing artist out there that the majority of people have and will never hear their music.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…I am a solo act, but there is something that may surprise people which is I am actually a studying Jehovah’s Witness. Yes, there are others in the music industry beside George Benson and “The Symbol” Prince J

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why? Lol, man you guys are definitely keeping me on my toes, lol uh to be honest probably none. I say none, because sometimes and in some situations it is just best to be alone and this may be the situation. Plus I do not believe in simply hooking up there is just too much out there that I do not care to experience (if you know what I mean), lol

Our last one is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”! As a real music lover, I wish and cannot wait for the days where the downloading and free streaming is over. People have to realize that this is how musicians and artist make a living. It is just unfair that labels and artist spend so much of their personal time, money, and talents and not be compensated yet people want others to support and buy their material. I also hope that these new artist wake up and understand that this is not an industry to where talent will simply be enough. And that they should not expect anyone to invest money or time into them when they are not willing to do it into themselves. I know this has nothing to do with music but people just really need to start treating each other as they want to be treated. All the bullying, robberies, killings, etc…Is just destroying us as a people. It’s sad when hear someone got snatched into a car in broad daylight in front of a bank. Last, there are a number of people in the world that can personally have enough financially that they can individually get the U.S. out of this “debt” it’s in. What this simply means is that these certain individuals have enough money that they or their great, great, great grandkids will never be able to spend in their lifetime. I just pray that maybe one day they decide to actually help oppose to given large sums of funds to companies that are “suppose” to help but never do. It’s time for that to change because they can make a difference.

KickActs interviews Nikol!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting

artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the

artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour!

bsWelcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you

can be found at on the web.

I have been on the stage since  forever. When I was old enough to walk, I would follow my older sister up onto stage while she performed a solo in church and when I felt like it I would sing a note, when I didn’t, I’d just stand there with my thumb in my mouth…I just wanted to be ON the stage. I’ve attended Berklee College of Music for Stage Performance and been to AMTC three times. When I was in school I was in every singing group they had (girls ensemble, chorale, chorus) and I played violin for 4 years (when my parents moved us from MA to NC the

school we attended didn’t have an orchestra, so I stopped playing). I bought my first guitar (a black thin-body Martin acoustic/electric) right after I turned 18 and started taking private lessons at Raleigh Music Academy. Since then, I have

opened up for a few fashion shows and have been playing shows at live music venues in Virginia and various cities in North Carolina. My first album just released on

July 30, 2013  it’s available on iTunes, Amazon, etc\’94bittersweet.\’94,

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Paramore – Hayley WIlliams has an amazing voice and their lyrics are incredible.\

Lacey Sturm – she was the lead singer for Flyleaf (she has since stepped down). i

wish i knew how to scream and sing like that, you know, and still have it sound

good..Christina Aguilera – her voice is unreal. that power, the unending range, and just

overall amazing talent, whoa!!!

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any

pitfalls they should avoid?

stay positive – pitfalls to avoid: all negativity. the more work you put in,

the better your results.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

i played a show in Chapel Hill, NC that was flawless performance-wise. the

energy was really there that night and the crowd was a lot of fun. also, i got

scheduled for a show at a big venue in Raleigh through a booking agency a couple

years back, and was given the wrong time for my set – they changed it when i got to

the venue, so i went from being 3rd or 4th on the lineup to 1st. i went on and only

had a handful of people there to watch because nobody planned on getting there until

much later. when the set time i was originally given came around, i did a little

show for people in the parking lot. that’s one of my favorite nights. the fans

really loved it and i felt good about turning the night around into something

positive.

On the same token as the above question. How about a worse gig story.

i actually just played an acoustic show and completely blew the beginning – i

forgot the words to the verse i was singing, so i moved on to a different one that

made people laugh just by the title – it was a cover by The Downtown Fiction called

“I Just Wanna Run” because that’s what I really wanted to do at that time, haha –

the rest of the show was successful from then on – sometimes all it takes is a

little loosening up

bittersweet album cover

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect

hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

every time i go to a show, i get a tshirt. so i have a collection of band

tshirts. my aunt makes beautiful quilts and she helped me cut and design a concert

tee blanket and i love it. it might be time for tshirt blanket part 2

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

i just kind of hate that schools are cutting music education.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that.

Chris, drums, teaches at the Living Arts School in NC and is a black belt in

Tae Kwon Do. Damien started playing guitar when he was 14 years old and has spent a

lot of time doing volunteer environmental work. Justin has played guitar for over 15

years and likes to kayak. Anthony started playing bass when he 14 and is an avid

mountain biker.

9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you getto hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell, and why?

i would love a vacation on the island!!

Our last question is called  “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and ’93SHOUT IT OUT LOUD’!

keep up with what’s new on www.nikolmusik.com and check out my CD on iTunes:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bittersweet./id668405769\

Nikol is ready to be entered for Ernie Ball’s Battle of the Bands at the beginning

on next year and i would really appreciate the support:

http://www.battleofthebands.com/u/nikolmusik\

i hope to see you at a show!!!!

Ten Questions with DOMINICAN DON

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Ten Questions with the “Morgan Riley Band”

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Special thanks to James for the interview!

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.
*We are the Morgan Riley Band we are a Country Rock/pop band. Our sound is similar to The Band Perry and Sheryl Crow Influenced with Rock music. It’s basically pop/rock country with heavy guitar leads. You can check out our website at www.morganrileyband.com and check out our reverbnation at www.reverbnation.com/morganrileymusic. Please follow us on twitter at www.twitter.com/morganrileymus and like us on facebook at www.facebook.com/mrileymusic. * Logo Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
*I personally love Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette, Jewel, and Taylor Swift because not only are they strong singers they are amazing writers. I write very similar to these artists. Alan’s heroes are the Black Keys and Guns and Roses. He loves them because it’s his favorite kind of music to listen to and play. Stevie loves Kiss, Metallica, and Van Halen. He grew up listening to them and they have inspired his guitar playing and influences the music he writes. Stevie is why our country pop is influenced by rock because it’s in his soul. * Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
*For someone first starting out in the music the best way to grow their brand is to get a great album recorded and start playing shows as much as they can. They also need to be on all the social media pages and try to network as best as they can. Everyone show they play they should a video camera recording it and post pictures. It really helps get the fans excited and they get to watch you grow. It’s all about the hype you create. You should definitely do some originals and covers at shows. If you do all covers and no originals people will always just look at you as a cover band and not take your music seriously. * morgan riley band Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
*Yes we were playing at Hannah Flanigan’s Irish Pub in Asheville NC. The crowd was just so amazing. I mean we had their attention the entire time. They even held up lighters on our slow songs and they sang with us on almost everything. The energy was just so crazy. It was packed and I even danced with some people in the audience while I was singing. Our guitarist jumped off the stage and started playing guitar from his knees. It was one of our craziest shows we have had. We really fed off the crowds energy. Asheville rocked that night. * * * On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.
*Our worst gig was when we had a sound guy that couldn’t get the sound right. We couldn’t hear anything on stage. On top of that it was an outside gig and it was pretty windy and rainy. Luckily we ended up sounding good after I watched the videos later but it was awful being on stage not being able to hear hardly anything.*

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
*I love acting. I use to pursue acting a lot for fun and try to participate it any plays or take any auditions I could find. *

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
*I think our present music scene is great. It seems like once we did a few shows it just really started growing for us and we have branched out in different states and cities. Now we have a great resume which helps us continue to get more gigs. *

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…
*Alan my guitar player does my hair. He is a licensed cosmetologist. He rocks on the guitar and rocks on my hair : ) It so awesome to have someone in your band be able to fix your hair when you need it colored on the fly. Stevie takes tie Kwon doh. He trains every week and he has a black belt. I was a solo artist before I started the Morgan Riley Band and I have an album out called Affinity under Morgan Riley and its on every digital site. *

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?
*Well since I am a female I probably wouldn’t hook up with anyone lol. But Stevie would pick Ginger because she is the glamour girl he says, she is hollywoods star. Alan would pick Mary Ann because he wouldn’t want Stevie’s left overs, lol! *

album cover

Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

*We just recorded our brand new single The Rowdy Shoutin Cowboys its a Country Rock/pop song it’s extremely catchy and in my opinion it could be the new anthem song for country music. We also recorded Was it you which is such a beautiful ballad. Every time we play both of these songs for our fans they love it. We plan on releasing it sometime soon. So please be on the look out for it : )

Ten questions with “Tornado Rose”!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Once again many thanks to James for the interview!

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.

Hi, my name is Brooke Bell and I am the singer, guitarist and autoharp player for the band Tornado Rose.

trcAs far as our style of music, I would consider us alternative-bluegrass, alternative folk, alternative rock, alternative alternative. It is so hard to classify our style but we don’t really care to. The scene gets too caught up in what things are called. It is inherent human nature to find patterns and classify things, it is our way of making sense of the world, it preserves our illusion of control and it helps us function amid the chaos and mysteries of the universe. When you focus on what something is called, you lose sight of what it actually is; its nature, purpose, essence is lost to a mere word, a word we made up, which may mean something different to you than me. Music is a way to transcend that; genres, grammys, top 20s are only efforts to systematize and quantify that which must never be systematized or quantified. I think we see plenty of evidence of that corruption in some of what passes for music in the mainstream and the stifling effect it can have on creativity.

Tornado Rose Alternate Hi Res

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

I would have to say Eryka Badu and Jill Scott are two big ones, as is Nina Simone. Jill Scott is a poetess first and foremost and her first album, ‘Who is Jill Scott’ changed my life. It was the real thing, baby. No candy pop, no sugar coat. The song she wrote ‘The Thickness’ gave power to a soft and vulnerable place in my soul. Eryka Badu is a warrior philosopher, she comes from a very deep place and her lyrics move tectonic plates, they are so powerful. When she sings ‘peace after revolution’ it stirs up something. She isn’t singing about being cheated on and coming back for more, she isn’t trying to sell me Reeboks or Citibank cards. Her music is rebellion. I love Bob Marley too. The roots of reggae music look a lot like the roots of bluegrass music and Americana. His music reminds me that we are all one family. I and I.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Forget money. Do what you do because you can’t not do it. Do it because you would do it if there weren’t a single person around to hear it, let alone pay you for it. Forget Cristal and Benzies- that’s the lie. Imagine the first humans to make a percussive beat on an animal skin under a primeval moon and the first to raise their voices in song, dancing around a fire. Imagine a force powerful enough to transcend our ideas of time and our illusion of being separate from one another- that’s the truth.

tri

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Where to begin? There was the time the lead singer face-planted before a big gig in Lawrence at the world-famous Bottleneck. (She took it like a champ but still refused to use the disgusting toilet in the green room, no matter whose venerated ass had sat it) My personal favorite was the long weekend we spent in Boulder at the foot of a mountain. Songs were hanging so heavy in the air there that we were able to simply pluck them like overripe apples. ‘Ripeness is all.’ As Shakespeare said. It was a beautiful moment in time. Ripe with perfection.

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

We were hired to play a 50th wedding anniversary by mistake once. It was horrible. They thought we were a country band and people were coming to the stage between every song to request Garth Brooks or some such nonsense- basically anything else at all. To make matters worse, it was in an auditorium just like the one you probably had in highschool too, so it was basically like every nightmare I ever had growing up. Except I wasn’t naked.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

Pictures of boobs, for sure. I’m so glad I’m not the only one! Besides bad poetry and decent prose, you mean? A little amateur astronomy on a clear night, the occasional feat of athleticism when the mood strikes, a little dabble in Eastern philosophy here, a smattering of ancient Chinese mysticism there. A little palm reading on occasion and if you punch me very slowly, I can defend myself with Kung Fu. Wing Chung style, naturally. Who do I look like, Jackie Chan?

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

We hail from Wichita, Kansas and, while the heartland is typically associated with bad country and top 20, the local scene has gradually been improving over the last few years. There is now far less demand for bad cover bands and more appreciation of great original material and lively stage performances. I blame the internet. There is no longer any excuse for liking bad music. Plus, with Spotify, we can publically shame anyone who’s playlist resembles that of a pre-pubescent suburban tweenager- and justly so. Just look at the difference between satellite radio and local radio- it is like comparing a rocket ship to a dodo bird. The days of two overworked uber-produced songs and 10 pathetically crappy filler ones being able to garner platinum sales of a 16.99 CD because we were all too stupid to understand it was robbery are gone, and good riddance.

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Our drummer is a ginger who can rap like nobody’s business and jump like Dick Fosbury, post Flop; I’m talking fucking groundbreaking type shit. He doesn’t need drums either, give him a gum wrapper and a zipper and you’ve got percussion. Our Guitar player is one of the most freakishly athletic people I have ever known; I have seen him play basketball, baseball, volleyball, football- even dodgeball. ‘Dominate’ doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’ve also never seen him get mad; never, not even once. Our bass player is from another planet- Crypton perhaps. He might also be a cy-borg, its hard to tell really. He does more shit in one day than most people get done in their whole lives. One night when we were playing a gig on the road he talked in his sleep: “Where. Where is. Where is the party.” In a perfect robot-voice.

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

I’m a chick, so I get to hook up with all of them. Cause I’m a giver. That’s how being a chick works, didn’t you know? Poor girls anyway. I doubt the Skipper, Gilligan or Mr. Howell could find the relevant lady-parts with two hands and a flashlight improvised from a coconut. However, there was the Professor…if anyone could grasp the concept of the ‘stimulation gap’, it’s him- that’s just good science. Science!

Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

SEPERATENESS IS AN ILLUSION. OUR INTERCONNECTION TO EACH OTHER IS WHAT IS REAL. MUSIC IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL, PRIMAL FORCES ON EARTH, TEARING AWAY OUR ILLUSIONS, IF ONLY FOR A MOMENT. IT IS THE PROOF OF OUR HUMANITY, OF OUR DIVINITY. FROM NOTHING, SOMETHING. MUSIC IS CREATION, CREATING IS LIFE, THE CREATION LIVES FOREVER.
